The right candidate will have the opportunity to work directly with local business owners, analyze and structure commercial credit, manage a growing loan portfolio, and play an important role in the continued development of NICCU’s commercial lending department.

We are looking for someone who understands that successful commercial lending is about more than making loans. It is about understanding the borrower’s business, building long‑term relationships, managing risk, and helping local businesses succeed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain relationships with existing and prospective business members.
  • Interview commercial borrowers and identify financing needs.
  • Analyze business and personal financial statements, tax returns, cash flow, debt service capacity, and guarantor strength.
  • Evaluate collateral, loan-to-value, industry risk, repayment ability, and overall creditworthiness.
  • Structure commercial loans and lines of credit consistent with the borrower’s needs and NICCU’s lending policies.
  • Prepare clear and thorough commercial credit analyses and loan presentations.
  • Present loan recommendations to management, loan committee, or the Board of Directors when applicable.
  • Manage an assigned commercial loan portfolio and monitor credit quality.
  • Obtain and review updated financial statements, tax returns, insurance, collateral information, and other required documentation.
  • Identify developing credit concerns and work proactively with borrowers and management to address them.
  • Assist with commercial loan closings and ensure required documentation and collateral perfection are completed.
  • Identify opportunities to deepen business relationships through deposit accounts, cash management services, and other credit union products.
  • Participate in community and business‑development activities.
  • Help improve and develop commercial lending procedures, underwriting practices, portfolio monitoring, and department processes as the program grows.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable regulations, credit union policies, and sound commercial lending practices.
Qualifications

We are open to candidates at different stages of their commercial lending careers.

Ideal candidates may include:

  • An experienced commercial or business lender looking for an opportunity to take greater ownership of a commercial lending program.
  • A credit analyst or junior commercial lender ready to move into a relationship‑management and lending role.
  • A consumer, agricultural, or other experienced lender with strong financial‑analysis skills and an interest in developing commercial lending expertise.
Preferred qualifications include
  • Approximately 2 or more years of commercial lending, commercial credit analysis, underwriting, banking, or closely related lending experience
    .
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business, economics, or a related field preferred; equivalent lending experience will also be considered.
  • Ability to analyze business and personal tax returns, financial statements, balance sheets, income statements, and cash‑flow information.
  • Understanding of debt service coverage, collateral analysis, loan-to-value, guarantor analysis, and commercial loan structure.
  • Strong judgment and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate credit decisions and financial concepts clearly.
  • Strong relationship‑building and customer‑service skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with senior management and other lending staff.
  • Good organizational and follow‑up skills.
  • Commitment to serving local businesses and the north Iowa community.
