Cancer Center Overview

The Mercy One North Iowa Cancer Center offers comprehensive oncology care, including state‑of‑the‑art therapies, personalized medicine, surgery, clinical research, and support services. All services are located in a single, easily accessible facility to provide coordinated care.

Role Summary

As an Outpatient Specialty Registered Nurse, you will provide nursing care in the Medical Oncology service, using the nursing process to assess and educate patients and families. You will care for all types of oncology and hematology patients, follow the Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa professional nursing practice plan, and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team.

General Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate customer service as a priority, integrating Service Excellence into all aspects of the work day.
  • Evaluate patient/family response to nursing interventions and act as a resource for clinical nursing staff.
  • Assess patients and identify common and complex physical and psychosocial needs.
  • Guide and direct patient care activities using clinical/critical thinking and evidence‑based practice; triage patient phone calls and refer or intervene as indicated.
  • Assist physicians or mid‑level providers in patient care activities (consultations, exams, procedures, follow‑ups, treatments).
  • Provide or facilitate learning opportunities to meet patient and family educational needs.
  • Serve as an educator for the management of parent‑ and oral antineoplastic therapy administration, safe handling, medical adherence, and side‑effect management.
  • Collaborate with inter‑disciplinary team to achieve desired patient outcomes.
  • Adapt positively to changing healthcare environment and support technology and process changes.
  • Participate in problem‑solving, nursing development, process improvement, and safety initiatives.
  • Promote and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, medical staff, and other departments.
  • Manage departmental budget participation: manage own hours, staffing, and supplies; apply process‑improvement techniques.
  • Participate in culture‑of‑safety and engaged action plans, staff and committee meetings.
  • Provide competent patient care to the target patient population, perform decisions based on knowledge of growth, development, and procedure adaptation.
  • Communicate and perform duties following Mercy One – North Iowa Guiding Behaviors.
  • Support and enforce all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures; identify safety concerns.
  • Act professionally, reflecting the mission, philosophy, and values of Mercy One – North Iowa and the Sisters of Mercy.
  • Perform other responsibilities as requested by Director/Supervisor.
  • Participate in continued education and professional development.
  • Maintain required confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
Education & Certification
  • Current RN license in the state of Iowa.
  • Associate degree in Nursing or RN program graduate.
  • Completion of Oncology Nursing Society courses:
    Cancer Basics, Chemotherapy Biotherapy:
    Fundamentals of Administration within 9 months, Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy Certificate, renewal every 2 years.
  • Strong preference for OCN certification within 2 years of employment.
  • Preferred minimum of 4 years experience in a health care setting (inpatient, outpatient, home care, hospice, or clinic).
