Male Correctional Officer/Jailer position – Cerro Gordo County, Mason City, Iowa. Full‑time with a salary range of $24.96 to $31.20 per hour, based on experience. Applicants will be accepted until the position is filled (first review on August 1 2025).

Assigned shifts may include 7:55 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., 3:55 p.m. to 12:00 p.m., or 11:55 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., with a rotation of 6 days on and 3 days off.

Summary

The Male Correctional Officer/Jailer will implement activities associated with the intake and holding of inmates in the Cerro Gordo County Jail. Duties include transports, court support, direct supervision of inmates, medical prescription distribution, booking, photographing, fingerprinting, and computer operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Communicate with court officials to ensure availability of inmates for trials or hearings.
  • Escort inmates to courts, hospitals, and other correctional institutions.
  • Schedule visits of medical personnel to treat inmates.
  • Conduct thorough searches of inmates throughout the facility to locate contraband.
  • Maintain cleanliness of jail facilities.
  • Assist trustees with special work assignments.
  • Accept and receive bail payments and issue receipts.
  • Arrange for release of inmates and prepare reports on inmate population and jail operations.
  • Submit reports to the Lieutenant and requisition supplies such as commissary, clothing, and housekeeping items.
  • Photograph, fingerprint, and measure height and weight of arrested suspects and record physical characteristics.
  • Fingerprint employment or federal clearance applicants and forward prints to other law‑enforcement agencies.
  • Testify in court when required.
  • Enter all inmate information into the jail computer system.
  • Open and close inmate trust accounts as necessary.

Qualification Requirements

To perform this job successfully, the applicant must be able to satisfy each essential duty and demonstrate: ability to contribute to a positive work environment; render independent judgment and decisions; represent Cerro Gordo County professionally; and interact effectively with inmates, staff, associates, professionals, and the public.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED. Typing and computer skills required.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos; to write simple correspondence; and to communicate effectively one‑on‑one or in small groups with inmates, employees, and others.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure; compute rates, ratios, and percentages; and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagrammatic form and to solve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Demands

The employee must walk, stand, sit, use hands, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl as required; lift or move up to 100 pounds; and occasionally restrain an inmate. Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment. The role is physically demanding and may involve exposure to potential injury from inmates. The noise level is usually moderate.

Work Environment

Work may involve exposure to physical harm, moderate noise, and other hazards typical of incarceration facilities.

  • Must have a valid Iowa driver’s license and be insurable for driving under county insurance policies.
  • Ability to obtain automobile insurance for county business mileage reimbursement.
  • Insurance limits required:
    • $100,000 bodily injury per person
    • $300,000 bodily injury per occurrence
    • $100,000 property damage or $300,000 single limit for all liability
