Employee will review plans and building applications for residentialand commercial improvements with the various building and zoning codes and ordinances. Meets regularly with CBO, other inspectors and Fire Department. Receives complaints of building code and ordinance violations and investigates or forwards on to appropriate individual for follow-up investigation. Visits job sites to determine compliance at stages from beginning to completion of construction and conducts inspections in accordance with the approved construction documents;
files copies of inspections forfuture reference as construction progresses. Completes inspectionsscheduled each day and maintains productivity to meet demand. Performs special investigations, such as buildings proposed to be moved or razed and recommends actions which will result in compliance
This is a public service job based in trust, credibility, and competency. It is a critical requirement of this position that the incumbent displays the desire and ability to perform and behave (on duty, as well as off duty) in a manner that does not damage or endanger the loss of trust with the public, co-workers, and other public safety forces.
Candidate must meet the following qualifications and requirements at time of appointment.
- Consults on-site with contractors regarding compliance;
Makes site inspections of the construction of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings;
Verifies and approves electrical and mechanical work;
Checks foundations, partitions, insulation and roof framing;
Inspects sprinkler and fire alarm systems;
Upon completion of the building, makes final inspection;
Files and maintains records of all inspections
Operates City vehicle in a safe and responsible manner in performance of job duties; and
Assists with other duties as assigned, i.e. customer service,leaf pickup, mowing, snow and ice control, etc. as necessary
- Possess a high school diploma or its equivilant;
Has a valid State of Ohio Driver's License accompanied by a good driving record;
Must possess commercial fire, fire protection, and mechanical inspector certifications.
Residential Building Official, Residential Building Inspector and or/ Electrical Plans Examiner Certifications are preferred.
Must possess Commercial Building Inspector and Electrical Safety Inspector Certification from the Ohio Board of Building Standards.
One year experience working for a certified Building Department
- The physical demands of the position require Excellent physical condition - In performing duties, the inspector is required to walk for extended periods of time in excess of one hour and must be able to walk up and down steps and ladders; able to bend, crawl and stand for extended periods of time; lift objects of 70 lbs. or greater;
Auditory acuity to hear the pager, radio, or communication from far distances;
Manual dexterity to operate light to heavy equipment, manipulate small objects;
Able to operate efficiently in dramatic climates;
The assignments of the inspector also requires the inspector to spend extended periods of time in excess of one hour driving an automobile or light truck and getting in and out of the vehicle repeatedly;
The assignments of the inspector may also require the inspector to spend extended periods of time in excess of one hour sitting at a desk or computer;
The inspector must be able to work eight consecutive hours daily and must be able to tolerate changing outdoor weather conditions;
Most work is accomplished in an outdoor construction environment that may have unknown safety hazards;
Mentally, the inspector must be able to carry out verbal and written instructions;
The inspector must be able to understand and interpret blueprints and diagrams;
The inspector must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure, including fractions and decimal fractions;
