Responsibilities- Mechanical Engineers are responsible for a wide range of assignments, including design, analysis, and test of opto-mechanical and electro-optical systems that must operate in challenging environments.
- Follow the product from conceptualization through hardware integration and testing, interfacing with Designers, Systems Engineers, other discipline engineers, Program Managers and customer counterparts.
- Perform CAD design, detailed finite element analysis, vendor and integration support, and hardware characterization testing.
- Provide technical leadership and oversight to multiple cross-disciplinary engineering design teams developing ruggedized opto-mechanical and electro-optical systems and technologies.
- Oversee or directly perform conceptualization and development of working designs, computer models, layouts and drawings using MCAD/MCAE tools.
- Develop, review and approve engineering documentation, including product specifications, drawings, assembly procedures, and test plans/procedures. Apply GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and DFMA; tolerance stack methodology is preferred.
- Perform mechanical analyses of components and subsystems using classical and Finite Element methods (quasi-static, kinematic, dynamic) to verify structural integrity, stability and performance.
- Prepare and review schedules, specifications, process standards, and other contract documentation to plan multi-year, multi-million dollar development efforts.
- Participate in internal and customer design reviews to demonstrate design conformance to requirements and customer specifications.
- Assist Purchasing with procurement of product hardware including vendor certification, vendor oversight, product source inspection, and nonconformance disposition as required.
- Support assembly, integration and test of product or prototype hardware; familiarity with optical systems and hardware integration is a plus. Knowledge of MIL-STD-810 and MIL-STD-461 is desired.
- Ensure quality through adherence to the Quality Systems Manual, applicable Standard Work Instructions and other standards.
- Adhere to budget and schedule commitments.
- Lead technical proposal efforts as part of a program capture team and estimate labor for proposed projects.
- Travel: 5% (minimal).
- Must be able to obtain security clearance as needed (not required upon entry).
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's Degree and minimum 6 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree with a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years of prior related experience.
- 6+ years of experience in relevant prototype development and production; experience with hardware development for aerospace applications is strongly preferred; 4+ years with a Master's degree.
- 2 years of experience with optics, lens design and common opto-mechanical alignment techniques is required. Experience with ultra high vacuum (UHV) processing and cryogenic compressor design/production methods are desirable (not mandatory).
- 4 years experience with CAD tools Solidworks/Solid Edge is required.
- 4 years experience with GD&T and drawing standards per ASME Y14.5 is required.
- 2 years experience with structural, structural dynamics, or thermal analyses is required. Familiarity with FEA tools (FEMAP/NX Nastran, ANSYS) is preferred. 2 years experience with computer design tools (Teamcenter, MathCAD, Matlab) is preferred.
- Meets eligibility requirements to obtain security clearance.
- EO / IR experience is a plus.
