Pet Care Assistant

The Pet Care Assistant works with the veterinary medical team to provide and prepare for the best medical care of pets, ensuring service that is happy, welcoming, friendly, and efficient, encouraging clients to return and refer others.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Prepare the treatment room for examination of pets, including all necessary medical items and supplies (e.g., vaccinations, fecal loops, slides).
  • Set up fecal samples, smears, and skin scrapings as allowed by state rules and regulations.
  • Maintain the flow of the Cycle of Service in accordance with position standards.
  • Provide client education regarding preventive care, Optimum Wellness Plans, and the status of hospitalized pets.
  • Serve as support to the Client Services Coordinator staff as needed.
  • Hold or restrain pets during examination, treatment, or inoculation.
  • Prepare routine in‑house laboratory tests (e.g., canine heartworm, feline leukemia, FIV, and canine parvovirus) as allowed by state rules.
  • Monitor the comfort of hospitalized patients by walking, exercising, feeding, and cleaning cages and pets when approved by the veterinarian or technician.
  • Bathe and dip pets when necessary to treat dermatological conditions.
  • Clean the surgical suite and instruments.
  • Ensure cleanliness of the hospital, including housekeeping tasks such as laundry, dishes, mopping, cage cleaning, trash collection, and instrument cleaning per hospital protocols.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Ability to multi‑task and shift attention between multiple tasks quickly and accurately.
  • Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English; correct spelling of common English words and job-specific terms.
  • Systematic organizational ability to carry out assignments and maintain order.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and practical solution orientation.
  • Client service orientation and willingness to deliver attentive, courteous service.
  • Accurate following of oral, written, or diagram instructions.
  • Basic mathematical ability (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, rates, ratios, percentages, unit conversion).
  • Computer skills: comfortable using Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and specialized software.
  • Initiative, integrity, cooperativeness, flexibility, independence, and resilience under stress.
Special Working Conditions
  • Work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Comfortable around a variety of pets, including dogs, cats, birds, and reptiles.
  • Work may exceed 40 hours per week and include weekends and evenings.
  • Stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and lift or carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Good ambulation and hand‑eye coordination for operating equipment and keyboard use.
  • Exposure to pets that may bite or scratch, anesthetic, radiation, biological hazards, and controlled substances.
Education & Experience
  • High School Diploma preferred.
  • Minimum 18 years old for duties involving radiography and radioactive substances.
  • One year of related experience required; customer service experience preferred.
Pay Range

$15.00 – $16.44 per hour. The specific rate is based on experience, skill level, and education.
