Clark Art Institute – Onsite Williamstown, Massachusetts
The Clark Art Institute is a distinctive cultural and scholarly institution that combines a world‑class art museum, a renowned research and academic center, and a thoughtfully designed campus set within the natural beauty of the Berkshires. Since opening to the public in 1955, the Clark has earned international recognition for the quality of its collections, the rigor of its scholarship, and its commitment to public engagement.
Few institutions globally share the Clark’s dual mission as both a leading museum and a center for advanced research and higher education, anchored by a major art history library and a long tradition of collaboration with artists and scholars.
The Clark’s collections are among the finest in the United States, featuring exceptional French Impressionist works, significant American paintings, and architecture by Pritzker Prize–winning architect Tadao Ando. With approximately 125 staff members and an annual budget exceeding $25 million, the Institute is supported by strong endowment resources and recent transformational philanthropy, including a $45 million gift that will fund a new wing and expand the collection.
The Clark’s mission is shaped by three defining elements: the quality of its art, the beauty of its pastoral setting, and a deep commitment to generating and sharing ideas that advance public understanding of art.
The Clark Art Institute seeks a bold, forward‑looking Director of Marketing and Communications to lead and elevate the Institute’s public voice at a pivotal moment.
Reporting to the Hardymon Director and serving as a key member of the Director’s Group, this role is responsible for shaping and strengthening the Clark’s regional, national, and international profile through integrated marketing, communications, and public relations strategies. The Director will oversee all aspects of the Communications Office, including media relations, marketing and advertising, digital platforms, editorial content, brand stewardship, graphic design, and audience development.
This position plays a central role in advancing the Clark’s seven‑year strategic plan (2022–2029), which emphasizes connecting broader and more diverse audiences with art, ideas, and nature. Key priorities include expanding digital engagement, evolving interpretive and editorial practices across platforms, and strengthening the Institute’s visibility and relevance on a global scale. Leading a team of five professionals, the Director will collaborate closely with colleagues across the museum, research, education, and advancement functions to ensure clarity, consistency, and impact in all external communications.
This is an exceptional chance to steward a respected global brand while contributing strategically to the future direction of one of America’s premier art institutions.
The salary range for this position is $138,000–$153,000.
