Organizational Scope:
Through a lens of equity and reporting to the building principal, the substitute teacher maintains learning in the absence of the regular teacher, either on a daily basis or on a long-term basis (about 11+ consecutive days).
Position Responsibilities:
* Using the teacher's provided lesson plans, if available, teaches students in the absence of regular teacher. If there are no lesson plans available, the teacher assures continuity of instruction as best able.
* Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
* Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
* Prepares for classes assigned.
* Sets and maintains standards of classroom behavior in an equitable manner.
* Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
* Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct. In the classroom, sets reasonable rules of class management.
* Maintains flexibility to have anticipated assignment changed on the day of the assignment.
* Makes him/her/their-self available to accept at least two days of substitute work each week.
* Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
* Other duties as assigned in keeping with the substitute assignment (day-to-day or long-term).
Job Qualifications & Physical Demands:
* Flexibility to react to unknown situations and to pivot when necessary as the needs of the assignment or the school change, sometimes without notice.
* Associate's degree or equivalent of two years of college, Bachelor's degree preferred.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, good humor, and a high level of responsibility.
* Technology skills sufficient to seek out and accept substitute assignments on at least two days each week.
* Must be able to assist in the protection of students and school property, and to assist the principal in fire and other emergency drills as required by law and School Committee policy.
