Position Summary

The Academic Monitor for the Compass Program assists students with developing strong study and learning habits while monitoring academic progress and maintaining written records. This role supports Framingham Public Schools’ mission to foster the development of the whole child by providing academic, social-emotional, and mental health support.

Responsibilities
  • Assist students in interpreting and understanding classroom teachers’ directions, course materials, and daily assignments.
  • Provide targeted academic support and tutoring as scheduled throughout the school day to promote grade‑level proficiency.
  • Help students organize their school work, manage timelines, and build foundational study habits across multiple subjects.
  • Support students to study for tests, prepare for assessments, and review core academic concepts.
  • Affirm student abilities and promote dignity, equity, and inclusion in all interactions.
  • Assist students in general daily class activities and maintain a safe, structured, and culturally responsive learning environment.
  • Utilize proactive de‑escalation techniques to handle potential student behavioral challenges.
  • Support individual student needs, including personal care, mobility assistance, or safety routine tracking.
  • Log, track, and maintain accurate records of student progress, missing assignments, upcoming assessments, and completed work.
  • Share tracking data regularly with teachers and program directors to identify learning gaps and adjust support structures.
  • Monitor student test preparation and academic readiness, providing positive, growth‑oriented feedback.
  • Communicate regularly in person, via email, phone, or video conference regarding student academic progress or behavioral concerns.
  • Foster collaborative, culturally responsive relationships with parents and guardians by providing updates in English, Spanish, and/or Portuguese.
  • Collaborate within the Department of Community Resource Development to ensure program alignment and student success.
  • Commit to ongoing professional development and stay current with cultural proficiency frameworks and instructional practices.
  • Maintain flexibility and cooperative attitude, understanding that school placement transfers may occur based on district needs.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Teacher certification or equivalent education and experience preferred.
  • Experience working with children in an educational setting required; proven track record of supporting a diverse group of students with a growth mindset.
  • Experience with special education students and/or children involved with child welfare and justice systems (DCF/DYS/DMH) is a plus.
  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese required.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to provide differentiated support, social‑emotional learning, proactive problem solving, and collaboration.
  • Demonstrated cultural proficiency and competence in fostering an equitable and inclusive environment.
Physical Working Conditions

Requires frequent travel throughout the school building and occasional need to move quickly across uneven surfaces. Requires ability to lift, move, and position materials up to 20 lbs and occasionally assist with student mobility or personal care. Must adapt to dynamic school environments and maintain focus amid classroom interruptions.

Covered under Framingham School Committee Contract. Work year: 197 days (Ten‑Months) including 12 paid holidays. Non‑Exempt (Hourly).
