Title: Middle School Librarian/Media Specialist
Position Summary: Wayland Middle School is seeking a dynamic, innovative, and student-centered Librarian/Media Specialist to lead our Library/Media Center. We are looking for an educator who seamlessly blends a passion for literacy with strong technology integration skills. The ideal candidate is equally enthusiastic about connecting students with great books, fostering a love of reading, teaching research and media literacy skills, and supporting digital learning initiatives.
This educator will cultivate a welcoming and inclusive environment where students feel a sense of belonging, curiosity is encouraged, and all learners have equitable access to resources and opportunities. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with students, staff, families, and district leaders to support student achievement and engagement.
Duties and Responsibilities (Not limited to)- Curate, maintain, and actively promote a diverse, engaging, and high-interest collection of print and digital resources.
- Foster a library environment that reflects high expectations, inclusivity, and a strong sense of belonging.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate library resources, research skills, and information literacy into curriculum and instruction.
- Differentiate instruction to support a wide range of student learning needs.
- Manage library operations, including budgeting, circulation, cataloging, inventory, and maintenance of the physical space.
- Transform the library into a vibrant, flexible learning hub that supports collaboration, creativity, and inquiry.
- Partner with the Information Technology Department to support the school's 1:1 Chromebook program and educational technology initiatives.
- Serve as a resource for students and staff regarding digital tools, applications, troubleshooting, and technology integration.
- Design and deliver engaging instruction in research methods, media literacy, source evaluation, and digital citizenship.
- Organize and lead school-wide literacy initiatives, including author visits, book fairs, reading challenges, Battle of the Books, and community book drives.
- Support district efforts to remove barriers and expand equitable opportunities for all students.
- Participate in school and district initiatives, committees, and professional development opportunities.
- Build strong, respectful relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Strong understanding of adolescent academic, social, and emotional development.
- Knowledge of student-centered instructional practices and heterogeneous classroom instruction.
- Familiarity with Massachusetts curriculum frameworks, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) practices.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and social justice.
- Bilingual proficiency is desirable.
- Strong technology skills, including Google Workspace for Education, Chromebook support, and library management systems.
Advanced Degree: Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) or related field.
DESE Licensure: Must hold valid Massachusetts School Librarian/Library Media Specialist licensure.
SEI Endorsement: Evidence of Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement is required.

Experience:
- Experience working with middle school students (Grades 6–8) preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of middle-grade literature, contemporary authors, and reading trends.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with educators, students, and families.
