Job Description

The Long Term Substitute Math Teacher will deliver engaging and effective instruction aligned with the middle school curriculum, collaborate with colleagues and administrators to support student learning, and contribute to a positive school environment. Responsibilities also include participating in professional development, attending meetings as needed, and supporting the overall school initiatives.

  • Meet and instruct assigned classes in the designated locations and times.
  • Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning that is appropriate to students’ maturity and interests.
  • Prepare for assigned classes.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a supportive learning environment.
  • Guide the learning process toward curriculum goals, establishing clear objectives and communicating them to students.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media, develop lesson plans and instructional materials, and provide individualized and small‑group instruction to adapt the curriculum to each pupil’s needs.
  • Assess student accomplishments regularly and provide progress reports as required; identify pupil needs and cooperate with other staff to resolve health, attitude, and learning issues.
  • Takes all necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Create an effective age‑appropriate learning environment with engaging displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, district policy, and regulation; evaluate pupils’ academic and social growth and prepare progress reports.
  • Assist administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct; develop reasonable classroom rules and procedure and maintain order fairly.
  • Be available to students and parents for education‑related purposes outside the instructional day when required.
  • Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss pupil progress and interpret the school program.
  • Plan and supervise assignments for instructional assistants when applicable, and provide input on their effectiveness to department heads.
  • Engage in personal professional development through in‑service education and self‑selected growth activities.
  • All other duties reasonably related to the position’s responsibilities may be assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Mathematics, or a related field required.
  • Massachusetts DESE licensure appropriate for the role and level.
  • Mathematics degree highly desired; experience with middle school math preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents, and community.
  • Ability to assist in the protection of students and school property, including participation in emergency drills as required.
  • Essential function: work onsite in district schools and buildings.
Physical Demands

The role requires moving throughout the classroom and school, standing and walking for extended periods, occasionally lifting objects up to 25 pounds, bending, reaching, and repositioning as needed. Light physical activity is the norm; use of a computer and standard office equipment is required.

Terms of Employment, Evaluation, and Salary

Terms of employment, evaluation, and salary are governed by the Unit A collective bargaining agreement currently in effect. Salary is $329.49 per day. Candidate review begins immediately.
