Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School Adult & Continuing Education - Franklin, Massachusetts

Job Description

Basic Welding, Tig Welding, Welding Certification Course. Program start/end dates to be determined. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday - 4 PM to 9:30 PM 200 hrs approx. 13 weeks.

The Welding Instructor provides hands‑on and classroom instruction to adult learners enrolled in the school's adult education welding program. The instructor prepares students with entry‑level welding skills aligned with industry standards, safety regulations, and workforce needs. Instruction may include shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW/MIG), flux‑cored arc welding (FCAW), and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW/TIG). The instructor supports adult learners in developing the technical competencies, safety awareness, and employability skills required for employment in the welding and metal fabrication industries.

Key Responsibilities
  • Instruction & Curriculum
    • Deliver classroom and shop instruction in welding theory, safety, and practical welding techniques.
    • Teach welding processes including SMAW (stick), MIG, TIG, and FCAW.
    • Demonstrate proper equipment setup, material preparation, and welding procedures.
    • Integrate blueprint reading, metallurgy basics, and fabrication skills into instruction.
    • Align training with industry standards such as those from the American Welding Society.
  • Student Support
    • Assess students' skill levels and adapt instruction for adult learners with varied backgrounds.
    • Provide individualized coaching and feedback during shop work.
    • Track student attendance, progress, and competencies.
    • Prepare students for entry‑level welding employment and possible certification exams.
  • Safety & Shop Management
    • Enforce strict adherence to OSHA and shop safety procedures.
    • Maintain welding equipment, tools, and training materials.
    • Ensure safe use of welding machines, grinders, torches, and other shop equipment.
    • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
  • Program Support
    • Assist with curriculum updates to reflect current welding technologies and industry practices.
    • Collaborate with program administrators on scheduling, program evaluation, and reporting.
    • Support recruitment, orientation, and retention of adult learners.
    • Maintain accurate records of student performance and program outcomes.

Job Requirements
  • Required Qualifications
    • High school diploma or GED required.
    • Minimum 5 years of industry experience in welding or metal fabrication.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in multiple welding processes (SMAW, MIG, TIG, FCAW).
    • Strong knowledge of welding safety practices and OSHA regulations.
    • Ability to teach and mentor adult learners in a hands‑on shop environment.
    • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • Welding certifications from the American Welding Society, preferably AWS D1.1 (e.g., Certified Welder or Certified Welding Inspector).
    • Prior teaching, training, or apprenticeship mentoring experience.
    • Experience with blueprint reading, layout, and fabrication.
    • Massachusetts Vocational Technical Teacher License (or ability to obtain).
  • Work Schedule Typically evening hours (e.g., 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM) during adult education sessions.
  • Physical Requirements
    • Ability to stand for extended periods in a shop environment.
    • Ability to lift and move materials up to approximately 50 lbs.
    • Ability to demonstrate welding techniques and safely operate shop equipment.
  • Work Environment
    • Vocational technical welding shop with exposure to heat, sparks, and welding fumes.
    • Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times.
