Salary: $56,295 to $108,155 Per Year

Qualifications
  • Thorough background in child development and the social/emotional and behavioral needs of students and their implications for learning
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, parents, and community about student needs
  • Master’s degree preferred in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or related field
  • Valid certification as a school adjustment counselor
  • Demonstrated competence working with children with social/emotional and behavior challenges in a school or related setting
  • Case management and coordination experience with families and collaterals
  • Alternative qualifications acceptable as determined by the School Committee
Job Goal

The School Adjustment Counselor shall provide supportive counseling to students and consultation to teachers, administrators, and parents to facilitate the personal, social, and academic adjustment of the student.

Job Responsibilities
  • Assist in identifying the individual needs of students
  • Provide intervention when situations arise that affect academic, social, or personal development of students
  • Help students increase self-esteem, social awareness, insight, and understanding of their social/emotional needs and strategies for improving behaviors
  • Provide individual and group counseling through the Student Success and Transition Program, including short‑term services in regular education and long‑term services through special education
  • Communicate with parents/families via written reports, conferences, telephone, email, and communication logs
  • Participate in IEP Team meetings and Student Support Team meetings; assist in developing strategies to meet student needs; assess behavioral needs and assist in developing Behavioral Intervention Plans and Data Collection procedures
  • Provide consultation to special education staff, regular education teachers, and administration
  • Maintain appropriate records and documentation
  • Serve as liaison to educational and service agencies in the community; coordinate and facilitate efforts between school, home, community, and outside resources
  • Develop and present group lessons focused on students’ attitudes toward themselves and others, social behaviors, pragmatic skills, and goal setting
  • Develop programs, parent groups, and workshops to address current issues such as family separations, child abuse, neglect, or death
  • Promote understanding of the social and emotional development of children
  • Other duties as assigned by the building Principal and/or the Administrator of Special Education
Supervision

The School Adjustment Counselor will work under the immediate supervision of the Administrator of Special Education and the Building Principal. Performance will be evaluated periodically by the administration for effectiveness and comprehensiveness of service to students, consultation to teachers and parents, and participation in the evaluation team process.

Job Requirements
  • License from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE)
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required
