Job Description

The Special Education Teacher (.6 FTE) position involves serving as a liaison for a caseload of students, developing IEPs, conducting assessments, and communicating with vocational and academic teachers, other special education staff, related service providers, parents, students, and administrators.

Liaisons must be fully versed in state and federal mandates, possess instructional and behavior management strategies, and be able to use data management and instructional technology daily. The candidate will report to the Director of Special Education.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Teach and maintain curriculum, making appropriate modifications and accommodations based on individual needs and learning styles.
  • Teach effective self‑advocacy, executive functioning, and compensatory strategies to increase student independence and self‑reliance.
  • Plan and assess curriculum and instruction for students enrolled in special education or inclusion classes.
  • Support students in developing self‑advocacy and executive functioning skills.
  • Promote high standards and expectations for student achievement.
  • Develop IEPs with other team members and monitor student progress.
  • Communicate student needs and appropriate strategies, accommodations, and modifications to other staff.
  • Complete all required IEPs, reports, and other documentation in compliance with standards and timelines.
  • Use student engagement methods that are welcoming, motivating, and supportive.
  • Cooperate with intra‑ and inter‑department efforts to integrate instruction.
  • Participate in activities that promote the best interests of students and the school.
  • Engage in professional development programs to stay current with modern pedagogy.
  • Cooperate with the department team leader in fulfilling the mission of the institution.
  • Perform other duties assigned by administration.
  • Demonstrate the ability to inspire excellence, achieve consensus, and respond effectively to the system’s mission with humor and enthusiasm.
Qualifications
  • Certified by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education in Moderate Disabilities at the secondary level.
  • Background or coursework to be classified as Highly Qualified in Math or English is preferred.
  • SEI endorsement is preferred.
  • Demonstrate characteristics that clearly incorporate a team concept and indicate an ability to relate positively to students and colleagues.
  • Possess a clear sense of purpose as it pertains to teaching young people who attend this school.
  • Have a professional and personal history that is exemplary and supported with references.
Compensation

1. Salary is based on credentials, approvals, and experience, and will be paid in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School Teacher’ Association and the Blackstone Valley Regional School District Committee. 2. All other benefits provided by the Agreement apply.
