GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide instruction in either (MUS
101) Music Theory I OR Music History II (MUS 103) during the Fall semester (September 3 - December 23, 2026).

Music Theory I examines the fundamental materials including pitch, rhythm, tonal systems, ear training, and basic harmony for those wishing to learn or to improve music reading skills. Students practice in performance and composition for instruments and voice.

Music History II provides a detailed study of styles and forms of music from the 18th century to present. Major compositions, personalities, styles, and forms are explored through structured listening, analysis, and reading assignments.

The Jazz Combo is a one-credit course in which students rehearse and perform jazz in a variety of styles which may include: blues, Dixieland, swing, bebop, Latin, and rock. Performances on campus and in the immediate community are part of Jazz Combo activities.

There may be opportunity to teach additional courses in subsequent semesters (depending on candidate's expertise) including:

* Introduction to Music Production and Recording Technology

* Applied Lessons (all instruments)

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

* Provide instruction that engages a diverse group of learners with different levels of preparation in music education.

* Select and develop appropriate materials for class use.

* Track and assess student progress.

* Maintain appropriate attendance and learner records.

* Participate in ongoing professional development.

Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

* Master's degree in Music, Music Theory, Music Composition, or a closely related field.

* Experience teaching a diverse group of learners with different levels of music preparation.

* Experience teaching at a community college or in a similar environment.

* Experience using evidence-based practices (e.g., active learning practices and use of multi-media for students with different learning styles) that foster student engagement and support student success.

* Piano proficiency to demonstrate concepts to students.

* Unrestricted authorization to work in the United States.

ADDITIONAL

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

* Expertise teaching the necessary content knowledge in Music Theory or Music History using a popular Learning Management System such as Moodle, Canvas, or Blackboard.

* Proficiency in using presentation software such as PowerPoint or equivalent.

* Experience teaching music theory as it relates to a wide variety of contemporary styles of music (popular, jazz, electronic).

* Interest in curriculum development and mentorship for student club activities related to music theory, performance, and composition.

Additional Information:

COMPENSATION:
Anticipated starting salary - Step I DCE Pay Scale (presently $4,536 for 3-credit course). Compensation for course delivery will be in accordance with the DCE/MCCC Contract (Memorandum of Agreement, Distance Education) Part-time, non-benefited MCCC Unit position.
