The dual-role educator will split responsibilities to foster a robust French language environment. As a French Immersion Teacher, the educator will provide high-quality, communicative world language instruction to 5th grade elementary students. As a French Reading Support Teacher, the educator will provide targeted, data-driven literacy interventions, diagnostics, and support for students navigating French literacy, specifically tailored for French Immersion.
Performance Responsibilities- Instructional Delivery:
Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging, age-appropriate French lessons aligned with the Massachusetts World Languages Curriculum Framework. - Communicative Approach:
Conduct classes primarily in the target language in an immersive classroom using comprehensible input, Total Physical Response (TPR), and storytelling to build proficiency. - Cultural
Competency:
Integrate cultural practices, products, and perspectives of the francophone world into daily instruction. - Classroom Management:
Establish a positive, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom environment conducive to language acquisition. - Assessment:
Utilize formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress in the three modes of communication:
Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational.
- Targeted Intervention:
Provide direct, small-group reading intervention to students needing support in French literacy, focusing on phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. - Data & Diagnostics:
Administer and interpret French literacy diagnostic assessments to identify student needs, track progress, and drive instructional decisions. - Collaboration &
Coaching:
Consult and collaborate with classroom teachers to differentiate core instruction and implement tier-1 literacy strategies in French. Collaborate with the French Immersion Elementary reading support team. - Curriculum Alignment:
Align French literacy interventions with the district’s science of reading initiatives, adapted for the linguistic structures of the French language. - Family Engagement:
Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student literacy progress and provide resources to support families.
- Must have native or near-native French fluency and be Elementary 1-6 certified by MA DESE.
- Education:
Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university (Master’s Degree in Literacy, Reading, or Foreign Language Education preferred). - Licensure:
Valid Massachusetts DESE license in Foreign Language:
French (PreK-6 or K-8). - SEI (Sheltered English Immersion) Endorsement required by MA regulations.
- Language Proficiency:
Native or near-native oral and written proficiency in both French and English. - Experience:
Minimum of 2–3 years of teaching experience in an elementary setting, preferably in a World Language or French Immersion/Dual Language program. - Key Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Deep understanding of the Science of Reading and how language acquisition principles intersect with literacy development in a second language; strong collaboration skills; ability to use data to group students and monitor growth; proficiency with educational technology to track student data. - Additional preferences:
At least 3 years of relevant experience preferred;
Master’s degree preferred;
Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
