Job Description

Dover-Sherborn Schools is seeking an Elementary Music/Band Teacher for the  School Year. This 1.0

FTE position is shared between Chickering School in Dover and Pine Hill School in Sherborn.

The teacher is responsible for providing high-quality general music and instrumental music instruction that fosters creativity, musicianship, and a lifelong appreciation for music. The successful candidate will create engaging and inclusive learning environments, maintain and expand a strong elementary band program, and collaborate closely with colleagues, families, and administrators across both school communities to enrich students' educational experiences through the performing arts.

Primary

Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver engaging, standards-based instruction in elementary general music and instrumental music.
  • Teach and direct elementary instrumental ensembles, including Grade 4 Band, Grade 5 Band, and Jazz Band, as well as general music classes across multiple grade levels.
  • Maintain, strengthen, and grow a high-quality elementary band program that encourages student participation and musical achievement.
  • Prepare students for concerts, performances, festivals, and other school and community events held during and outside the regular school day.
  • Develop age-appropriate lessons that incorporate singing, movement, instrument performance, music literacy, composition, improvisation, listening, and creative expression.
  • Assess student learning using a variety of formal and informal measures and communicate student progress effectively with families.
  • Establish positive relationships with students and create an inclusive classroom environment where all learners can succeed.
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, rehearsals, performances, instrument care, and program expectations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to support student learning and school-wide initiatives.
  • Serve as an active member of the Fine Arts Department by collaborating on curriculum development, concerts, performances, and department initiatives.
  • Support fellow music educators during large ensemble rehearsals and performances, including band and chorus concerts.
  • Manage music classrooms, rehearsal spaces, instruments, equipment, the music library, and instructional materials to ensure they are organized, safe, and well-maintained.
  • Participate fully in faculty meetings, professional development, curriculum work, and other school responsibilities as designated by the school principal.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Massachusetts licensure in Music
  • Demonstrated experience teaching both elementary general music and instrumental/band.
  • Knowledge of developmentally appropriate elementary music instruction.
  • Experience with instructional approaches such as Conversational Solfege, Orff-Schulwerk, Kodály, Dalcroze, Music Learning Theory, or comparable research-based methodologies.
  • Experience directing beginning instrumental ensembles and selecting appropriate repertoire.
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Piano and/or guitar accompaniment skills are preferred.
  • Experience working with diverse learners and implementing inclusive instructional practices.
