Job Description

The Adult Education Program is seeking for a Part-Time Evening GED/HiSET English Language Arts and Social Studies Teacher. The GED/HiSET English Language Arts (ELA) & Social Studies Teacher will be responsible for providing high-quality, evidence-based instruction to adult learners preparing for the GED and/or HiSET examination at the Grade Level Equivalency (GLE) 9–10 level. Instruction is delivered in a HyFlex classroom, with students participating simultaneously in person and remotely.

The teacher is expected to foster a supportive, engaging, and academically rigorous learning environment that develops reading comprehension, writing, critical thinking, civic literacy, and digital skills while preparing students for success on the GED and/or HiSET exam, postsecondary education, and the workforce. Teachers will accomplish this by evaluating student progress, adjusting instruction when necessary, and drawing upon professional knowledge, research and standards to respond to the needs of students within their classroom.

Teachers will work together with the Assistant Director of Curriculum and Instruction and advisors to optimize student progress towards academic goals.

Job Requirements
  • RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
    a. Meets or exceeds program-based performance measures.
    b. Draws upon and applies the knowledge detailed in the Massachusetts Proficiency Guides for Teachers of Adult Education.
    c. Plan and deliver standards-aligned in HSE ENglish Language Arts and Social Studies for learners at GLE 9-10
    d. Teach reading comprehension, writing, grammar, vocabulary development, language conventions, and critical analysis of informational and literary texts.
    e. Teach U.S. History, civics and government, economics, geography, and historical reasoning.
    f. Prepares and electronically submits standards based lesson plans aligned to the program curriculum to the administration assigned times.
    g. Takes an active role in the implementation of an integrated advisory process that helps students set and achieve academic goals and to work with the Assistant Director of Curriculum and Instruction and Advisor to help students acquire relevant information and experiences, and make decisions regarding academic activities related to interests, goals, abilities and content requirements.
    h. Implements reasonable accommodations to enable individuals with disabilities who are otherwise qualified to perform the essential functions.
    i. Sets and achieves student learning and professional practice goals.
    j. Collaborates as a team member with all staff to foster an environment for improved academic and personal outcomes for every student.
    k. Participates in a variety of high-quality professional development activities to refine and expand teaching practices based on program-designed self-assessment.
    i. Meets all reporting deadlines and attending all scheduled meetings, pre/post week training, and all on-site professional development offerings.
    j. Assists with safety policies and procedures for staff and students.
    k. Completes other duties as assigned by Assistant Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
  • At least 3 year(s) of relevant experience preferred.
  • Bachelor degree preferred.
