Utility Scale Battery Energy Storage System BESS Technician

Responsible for assigned aspects of the maintenance and operation of utility scale battery energy storage system BESS. Duties include monitoring BESS plant operation through SCADA, commissioning, testing, inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing BESS systems, including inverters, battery packs, cooling systems, transformers, switch gear, and metering systems. This position is an on-site position located in Uxbridge, MA.

Experience:
  • 3+ years of experience in utility-scale renewable energy Operations & Maintenance, including solar and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
  • Experience in operating and maintaining power plant electrical systems, SCADA and controls systems operation, troubleshooting advanced electrical components, and using procedures to perform equipment preventative and corrective maintenance preferred.
  • Prior supervisory experience a plus.
Education:
  • Electrical certifications, state, journeyman, etc..
  • College or technical degree preferred.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Equivalent training in military, utility, or power industry a plus.
Physical Requirements:
  • Bending, kneeling, twisting, the ability to lift up to 70 pounds, the ability to climb ladders, and wear PPE for extended periods of time. Ability to work in high and low temperatures, sun exposure, and navigate on uneven ground on foot.
  • Ability to differentiate between different colors to manage color-coded wiring.
  • Good hand-eye coordination.
Required Skills/

Competencies:
  • Demonstrated knowledge in electrical safety and arc flash standards.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and ability to follow operating, switching, maintenance, safety and environmental procedures.
  • Must have a strong safety background with experience in Lockout Tag Out and Job Hazard Analysis.
  • Working knowledge of industrial or power facility operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of local and national electrical codes.
  • Proficiency reading and understanding Electrical schematics and prints.
  • Proficient at medium & high voltage switching.
  • Experience testing and troubleshooting medium voltage and high voltage equipment, including transformers, potential transformers, current transformers, breakers, relays, contractors, motors and inverters.
  • Capable of retrieving relay files and documentation.
  • Fully fluent in utilizing a CMMS system for maintenance tracking.
  • Proven computer skills in a Windows environment (Microsoft Office Products) is required.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to communicate in English both verbally and written. Strong communication skills are a must.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects.
  • Ability to work independently with little to no direction within company compliance and work processes.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to complete Nova Source Technician Qualification Standards successfully within 90 days of hire.
Essential Responsibilities:
  • Perform to quarterly key performance indicators, such as actual versus expected energy generation, on-time planned maintenance, and support overall plant and equipment efficiency.
  • Ensure a safe work environment by promoting strict adherence to company protocols.
  • Responsible for personal safety, quality and schedule adherence.
  • Perform and document training on and ensure compliance to Job Hazard Analysis, Pre-Job Brief and Lock-Out-Tag-Out procedures.
  • Responsible for a variety of PM work including measuring, reading, testing and performing maintenance procedures on all site components.
  • Train personnel in safety, environmental and procedural requirements.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinate on-site project planning, installations, commissioning, quality inspections, and performance testing.
  • Write and enforce work and equipment testing instructions and procedures, including normal and maintenance operating procedures.
  • Ensure work orders are complete in their entirety.
  • Prepare documents necessary for procurement and utilization of materials and vendor services.
  • Ensure all documentation and required reports are reviewed, complete, submitted and filed.
