Lead, Automation & Controls Engineer

Billerica, MA – Design, develop, and optimize advanced automation systems for a manufacturing facility. Serve as a technical expert, lead complex automation projects from concept to implementation, and ensure safety, reliability, and scalability.

• Own the design and integration of advanced automation systems and controls.
• Lead root‑cause analysis and corrective actions for automation‑related downtime, quality issues, and system failures.
• Write, debug, and optimize PLC logic and HMI interfaces to improve cycle time, reliability, and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
• Develop and implement automated inspection systems utilizing vision, sensors, and gauging for part presence, orientation, dimensional accuracy, and cosmetic quality.
• Support internal system commissioning, validation, and acceptance testing.
• Conduct risk assessments, safety validations, and compliance checks.
• Optimize automation for throughput, quality, and cost efficiency.
• Troubleshoot complex control systems and implement advanced diagnostics.
• Mentor and train engineers and technicians on automation best practices.
• Collaborate with global teams to standardize automation platforms and processes.
• Stay ahead of emerging technologies and recommend strategic improvements.

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Software, or a related field.
• 8+ years of experience in industrial automation and controls engineering.
• Expert‑level proficiency in PLC programming (Allen Bradley/Rockwell) and HMI/SCADA systems.
• Working knowledge of industrial networks, safety systems, and relevant standards.
• Excellent problem‑solving, leadership, and communication skills.
• Proven track record of leading large‑scale automation projects.
• Ability to influence automation strategy and drive continuous improvement.
• Preferred: data analytics for smart manufacturing, Ignition software development, cleanroom automation, and high‑precision assembly processes.

• Compensation: $119,500–$149,000 per year (based on skills).
