Location: North Chelmsford

Seeking a skilled Design Engineer to join a growing manufacturing team. This is a direct hire opportunity for an engineer with experience designing products and components in a plastic (preferred) or steel manufacturing environment. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing and refining product designs from concept through production while collaborating with manufacturing, quality, and customer-facing teams.

Responsibilities

Product Design & Development

  • Design components and assemblies using CAD software such as Solid Works, AutoCAD, or similar platforms.
  • Develop detailed 2D drawings and 3D models, including GD&T annotations, tolerances, and material specifications.
  • Lead Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) reviews to optimize designs for production.
  • Create and maintain engineering documentation, bills of materials (BOMs), and design records throughout the product lifecycle.

Manufacturing Support

  • Work closely with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are production-ready and tooling is optimized.
  • Support first article inspections (FAI) for new and revised products.
  • Investigate and resolve production issues related to dimensions, materials, and process variations.
  • Implement corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with sales, project management, and customers to translate requirements into engineering solutions.
  • Participate in design reviews, FMEA activities, and technical presentations.
  • Support cost-reduction efforts through design improvements, material substitutions, and process enhancements.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Plastics Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field (steel).
  • 3-7 years of product design experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience working with plastics or steel products/components is required.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software, preferably Solid Works.
  • Strong understanding of GD&T and ASME Y14.5 standards.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
