Adaptive Optics Associates – Xinetics (AOA Xinetics), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Northrop Grumman Space Systems (NGSP), is currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support our Xinetics program activities in Devens, MA.

AOA Xinetics (AOX) designs, develops, and manufactures precision, advanced optical products and systems such as deformable mirrors, optical systems, adaptive optics control systems, and silicon carbide optical structures for the U.S. Government, commercial customers, and U.S. defense prime and second-tier contractors. Markets for these technologies include terrestrial and space-based astronomy, semiconductor manufacturing, energy generation, Defense ISR, and Directed Energy. Xinetics program core technologies include Lead Magnesium Niobate (PMN) electrostrictive actuators and lightweight Ceraprint silicon carbide optics and precision structures

Roles And Responsibilities
  • Design and documentation of opto-mechanical and electro-mechanical systems on multiple projects through all phases of development and manufacturing
  • Create part and assembly models, detailed drawings, and associated parts lists, in accordance with ASME Y14.5 and AOX drawing standards
  • Perform trade studies, design of experiments, assembly and testing of parts, components, and assemblies
  • Develop and execute mechanical testing and qualification plans to meet system requirements
  • Work closely with senior engineers including the chief engineer and program management to drive hardware design, working within challenging schedules
  • Derive system level requirements into mechanical designs
  • Support for root cause analysis and quick resolution of manufacturing line stops and other critical production activities
  • Collaborative work with other engineering organizations, program management, factory operations, global supply chain, and quality
  • Travel to customer and supplier sites as required
Basic Qualifications

A candidate must meet ALL of the criteria below. The candidate must:

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM (Science Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) discipline with two 2 years of relevant experience, or combination of education, co-op or internship
  • General knowledge or coursework in manufacturing, design and drawing practices including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
  • Experience or coursework in CAD systems: NX CAD, Solid Works or CREO
  • Strong communication oral and written communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information clearly
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance
  • U.S. Citizenship is required
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Practical understanding of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and ASME Y14.5M GD&T specifications
  • Experience with Opto-mechanical systems in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience with test fixture design and development
  • Familiarity with product lifecycle and configuration management tools
  • Demonstrated creativity and ability to solve a wide range of difficult problems
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on continuous improvement
