Town Principal Assessor

The Town of Deerfield (pop. 5,090) is accepting applications for a permanent Town Principal Assessor. This position works under the general administrative and policy direction of the Board of Assessors and is appointed by the Select board. This position performs a variety of routine and complex technical, administrative, and field work related to the appraisal and valuation of commercial, residential, industrial, and personal property.

The Principal Assessor oversees the Town’s assessing functions in accordance with Massachusetts General Laws, Department of Revenue requirements, and locally adopted policies of the Board of Assessors.

The ideal candidate will be a knowledgeable and self‑motivated assessment professional who combines strong analytical ability with sound judgment and exceptional communication skills. They will bring demonstrated experience in property valuation, proficiency with CAMA systems and Massachusetts assessing laws, and the ability to interpret complex data with accuracy and consistency. The ideal candidate will excel at working independently, managing multiple deadlines, and providing courteous, solutions‑oriented service to taxpayers, colleagues, and appointed boards.

They will also possess the professionalism, integrity, and collaborative mindset needed to represent the Assessors’ Office effectively in all interactions.

This is a 40‑hour per week salaried position with compensation between $86,000 and $95,000. Core department hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., with evening and weekend hours as necessary. The Board of Assessors currently meets on a monthly basis.
