Job Details

Salary range: Determined by experience, seniority, and budget. For union positions, salary is set according to the applicable bargaining unit’s schedule.

Short‑term status: If work is expected for less than 90 days, the position will automatically revert to a short‑term seasonal role. Salary for short‑term positions will be discussed during the interview.

Duties
  • Supervise maintenance of assigned recreational areas, including grounds, buildings, equipment, and removal of hazardous trees or limbs.
  • Inspect conditions of state‑operated forest and park recreational areas and facilities to ensure suitability for public use and compliance with safety standards.
  • Patrol recreational areas and facilities to maintain security and enforce applicable rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Check buildings on a daily basis.
  • Issue permits, grant usage permissions for recreational facilities and park areas, and collect related fees.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports concerning assigned work to provide information and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Assist in the organization and implementation of recreational and cultural programs for visitors.
  • Coordinate activities and work of volunteers, court‑referred individuals, and other staff.
  • Determine supply needs; operate and perform routine maintenance on various types of equipment and vehicles; provide information to the public; interview candidates for employment; provide on‑the‑job training; and use small hand tools.
  • Monitor the operation, administration, and maintenance of a major recreation area with satellite sites, extensive grounds, and multiple recreational facilities, including oversight of the online revenue reporting system and the ORMS reservation system.
  • Represent the agency at meetings and conferences with federal, state, municipal agencies, and community groups to provide information regarding agency objectives and to obtain cooperation in achieving goals and resolving problems.
  • Prepare budgets for assigned areas by projecting resource needs and submitting required documentation for the agency’s budget request.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

First consideration given to applicants who apply within the first 14 days.

Minimum entrance requirements:

  • Two years of full‑time (or equivalent part‑time) technical or professional experience in forestry, parks, or recreational management; or
  • Any equivalent combination of required experience and the following substitutions:
    • Associate’s degree or higher with a major in forestry, natural resources management, or parks and recreation management (education toward such a degree will be prorated based on completed requirements).

Special requirement: Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s License (where required by assignment).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Current and valid Massachusetts driver’s license.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather, including odd hours, overtime, and holidays.
