Town of Edgartown Assistant Beach Director ($31.22-$44.44)

The Town of Edgartown is seeking an Assistant Beach Director to assist with the daily management, operation, and maintenance of Town beaches and park facilities. This 40 hour / week position works under the direction of the Beach Director and Parks Commission, and combines hands-on field work, beach safety, regulatory compliance, and facility and equipment maintenance. The role requires public interaction with beach patrons and over-sand vehicle users regarding beach access, assists with installation and removal of OSV corridor fencing, and assists in the supervision of seasonal staff.

Applicants should maintain a valid Massachusetts drivers’ license, a high school diploma or equivalent, and experience performing hands-on maintenance and vehicle operation.

Position provides technical, administrative, and laboring work to the Beach Director in managing the beaches and other recreational properties under the jurisdiction of the Parks and Recreation Department.

Possess the ability to explain applicable statutes and by-laws which regulate the control of parking and beach access, use of Town of Edgartown regulated beach recreational areas; advises individuals on specific state laws, town by-laws, codes and rules or regulations regarding such use or access; issues verbal warnings to violators;

Communicates orally and in writing effectively to co-workers, superiors, the general public, other town departments, other governmental agencies and others;

May be required to attend meetings and participate in discussion on matters affecting Park Department programs;

Inspects, or is responsible for assigning staff to inspect, Town of Edgartown staffed beaches daily to ensure compliance with safety, town by-laws and other regulations;

Inspects and performs routine maintenance of Town owned equipment and facilities;

Assists in planning for and installation and subsequent removal of OSV corridor fencing and installation of suitable habitat symbolic fencing;

Provides limited enforcement of beach rules and regulations; ability to contact the appropriate authorities as needed for assistance;

Installs and performs routine maintenance of signage, pedestrian boardwalks and walkways, interpretive signs and alike;

Performs a variety of related duties.

Under general direction, employee assists with plans and prioritizes the majority of routine day to day operations. The employee is expected to solve most problems of detail or unusual situations by adapting methods or interpreting instructions accordingly. Works under the administrative direction of the Beach and Recreation Director and the Parks Administrator in accordance with established town policies and applicable state and laws and regulations.

Employee may assist with analyzing program objectives, determining the various departmental work operations needed to achieve them, estimating staff resources required reporting periodically on the achievement and status of the program objective; and recommending new goals. Employee may also recommend changes in day to day operations and may assist in developing plans for achieving short and long-range objectives. At times the employee may delegate authority to subordinates and hold them responsible for the performance of their unit’s work.

The employee may be called upon to review work in terms of accomplishment of program objectives and prepare progress reports.
