Job Overview

Under medical supervision, this position provides evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders, including in‑center overnight polysomnograms and home sleep testing, as well as diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education. This individual functions independently to safely operate sophisticated medical equipment to record sleep/wake physiology, and documents and scores testing accurately in the medical record to comply with department and regulatory requirements.

Location: Lawrence Memorial Hospital - Medford, MA

Hours: Per Diem / as needed – Nights/Overnights (7 p‑7 a)

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion of a sleep technology program
  • Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), or eligible for RPSGT or Registered Sleep Technologist (RST), or Certified Polysomnographic Technologist
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Two years of experience in a sleep lab
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years of experience in a sleep lab
Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all‑inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

  • Collect, analyze, and integrate patient information to identify and meet the patient‑specific needs.
  • Determine final testing parameters/procedures with the ordering physician or medical director and sleep center protocols.
  • Review the patient's history and verify medical orders.
  • Follow sleep center protocols related to the sleep study.
  • Verify patient identification, collect documents, and obtain consent for the study.
  • Explain the procedure and orient the patient for either in‑center or home sleep apnea testing using age‑appropriate education.
  • Select appropriate equipment, calibrate for testing, determine proper functioning, and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Administer oxygen and nasal continuous airway pressure and employ ventilatory assist devices per established protocols set forth by the medical director; monitor polysomnograms to recognize pathology requiring treatment.
  • Follow procedural protocols – e.g., Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP and oxygen titration – to ensure proper data collection.
  • Perform special procedures such as multiple sleep latency testing and ambulatory monitoring.
  • Score sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines; score clinical events using AASM standards.
  • Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.
  • Interview patients to assess current medications, caffeine or alcohol intake, sleep patterns, and need for intervention.
  • Perform patient education and instruction appropriate for home sleep apnea testing.
  • Cleans, disinfects, and follows infection control procedures.
  • Perform routine equipment care, maintenance, and inventory evaluation; inspect and maintain sleep study related equipment.
  • Respond to patient procedural inquiries by providing appropriate education per sleep center protocols.
  • Prepare the department for joint commission, AASM, and other regulatory surveys and participate in CQI activities.
  • Assist the medical director, clinical director, and/or manager in all aspects of sleep center operations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or necessary to assure appropriate patient care and consistent staffing coverage within the department.
