Job Summary

Under general direction, the Ophthalmic Photographer provides specialized ophthalmic and medical photography services to support patient care, diagnosis, education, and clinical documentation. This role works closely with physicians and other members of the care team to obtain high-quality photographic and video images using a variety of imaging techniques and equipment.

Essential Functions
  • Performs a variety of ophthalmic photography studies, including fundus, full-face, wide-angle, and anterior segment imaging, for patient records, clinical evaluation, and teaching files.
  • Reviews physician orders in EPIC and confirms the appropriate imaging study before beginning photography.
  • Captures high-quality color photographs and ensures all images are accurately identified and associated with the correct patient.
  • Operates still cameras and other specialized imaging equipment to capture diagnostic images, including time-lapse black-and-white or digital images used to evaluate changes at the fundus.
  • Explains imaging procedures clearly to patients and provides appropriate instructions for ophthalmic photography, fluorescein angiography, and indocyanine green (ICG) angiography.
  • Supports patient safety and comfort throughout procedures and promptly communicates any adverse reactions to the appropriate clinical staff.
  • Accurately documents procedures and relevant information in EPIC.
  • Provides guidance, mentorship, and technical support to other photographers as needed.
  • Collaborates with physicians and senior medical staff to support the delivery and coordination of ophthalmic photography services.
Qualifications
  • Education High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Photography or a related field preferred.
  • Equivalent experience cannot be substituted for the required education.
Licenses & Credentials

No specific license or certification required.

Experience
  • 2-3 years of experience in ophthalmic or medical photography required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong technical skills in ophthalmic and medical photography.
  • Ability to train, mentor, and support colleagues.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to follow established protocols and maintain accuracy in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Strong patient-centered and customer service skills.
  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively with patients, physicians, and other members of the care team.
