The Town of Edgartown seeks an Airfield Manager and Airfield Assistant for the 2026 operating season at the Katama Airfield, from at least May 15th to September 15th, 2026.

Airfield Assistant – $22.00-$26.77

The Airfield Assistant shall report to the Airfield Manager, provide coverage for at least two days per week, and provide administrative and technical support to the Airfield Manager during other times.

KATAMA AIRFIELD COMMISSION KATAMA AIRFIELD ASSISTANT DEFINITION

Airfield Assistant functions are required only during the season in which the airfield is open and in full operation. The position reports to the Airfield Manager and assists in the management and daily operation of the Katama Airfield in compliance with applicable Federal, State, and Local regulations. In addition to regular daily activities, responsibilities will include collection of landing fees, airfield maintenance, and oversight of the facilities when the Airfield Manager is not in attendance.

ESSENTIAL

FUNCTIONS

  • May be required to assist with on-site safety at airport facilities; notifies proper emergency response organizations, and provides assistance and coordination in the event of an emergency;
  • Performs services related to fueling, take‑off, landing, and parking, and collection of fees for remittance to the Town;
  • Accurate record‑keeping of all airfield activity, including parking, landing, fueling, and all other operations;
  • Assists the Airfield Manager in compliance with Airfield Operating Regulations as prescribed by the Airfield Commission, Conservation Commission, the Mass DOT Aeronautics Division, the Mass DEPaS related to the operation of the avgas storage tank, and the FAA;
  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed, or as situation dictates.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The Airfield Assistant works under the direct supervision of the Airfield Manager.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

The Airfield Assistant will be responsible to follow‑up with contractors potentially employed by the Airfield to ensure work is performed to expectations.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Duties include primary responsibility for major functional and technical processes, service delivery, and contribution to organizational plans and objectives and fiscal responsibility for the airport including buildings, equipment, and staffing utilization. Consequences of errors, missed deadlines, or poor judgement could jeopardize operations or have financial or legal repercussions.

JUDGEMENT

Guidelines, which may be in the form of regulations or organizational policies, general principles, legislation, or directives that pertain to a specific functional area, only provide limited guidance for performing the work. Extensive judgement and ingenuity are required to adapt existing methods and approaches for accomplishing objectives or to deal with unusual situations within the limits of the guidelines, procedures, or policies;

exercising considerable initiative, creativity, and independent judgement in the planning, administration, and execution of airport operations.

COMPLEXITY

The work consists of employing many different principles, techniques, and practices relating to daily activities.
