Job DescriptionBoiler Operator must possess a current Massachusetts Department of Fire Services - Second Class Firemen’s License.
Job SummaryThe Billerica, MA Manufacturing Facility operates 5-7 days per week. Boiler Operators work any day of the week, including weekends. Weekend work may be overtime or part of the technician’s normal schedule. Business needs may change shift lengths or schedules. Hours may vary from 8-10 or 12-16 per day. Shift rotations can range from a single straight shift to rotating or staggered shifts.
Boiler Operators are expected to rotate properly and be ready for any shift. Additional days may be required for overtime. This facility is a union shop with an active collective bargaining agreement with the United Steel Workers.
- Assist in the start-up and shutdown of the boilers and auxiliary equipment as directed.
- Test boiler’s watery chemistry and adjust doses to maintain proper limits.
- Conduct bi-hourly boiler room rounds to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Lubricate machinery and equipment as assigned.
- Inform the production supervisor of all operational and safety issues observed.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Support other departments as needed.
- Observe and follow all safety rules and regulations, including, but not limited to, Confined Space Entry, Lockout/Tagout, Hot Work, etc., and be familiar with chemical safety and Materials Safety Data Sheets.
- Utilize steam plant related tools and equipment, as well as all computer–related systems.
- Use Personal Protective Equipment, including safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, respiratory protection (dust masks, respirators, etc.), chemical splash aprons, Tyvek suits, etc.
- Ensure the maintenance of all related boiler room equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance on facility and production equipment as needed.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent trade school certification, GED equivalent, or a combination of education and experience.
- Must possess a current Massachusetts Second Class Firemen’s License per the union contract.
- Ability to understand and execute written and oral instructions and follow up on shifts.
- Ability to safely lift and carry up to fifty pounds; capable of bending, walking, standing, “stopping” and climbing stairs and ladders, and safely moving materials and/or equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written, including electronic communications.
- Good judgment to act independently in carrying out primary job functions.
- Possession of a Massachusetts Grade 2 Industrial Wastewater Treatment License.
