Job Description

The District Resource Nurse is a member of the health services team who is able to adapt to the varying needs of the team throughout the school year. This range of needs may include, but is not limited to, long‑term placement in a school health office, assisting a School Nurse with yearly student screenings, providing care for students with medically‑complex needs that require 1:1 skilled nursing services, and attending field trips with students who have medically‑complex needs.

The District Resource Nurse, an RN or LPN, functions under the direct supervision of the District Nurse Leader and/or the building‑based School Nurse.

Responsibilities
  • Assure proper assessment and care for student visitors for all emergent, urgent, and non‑urgent injury and sudden illness situations, including administration of medications and medically prescribed interventions and treatments per orders from health care providers in accordance with Massachusetts Department of Public Health protocols.
  • Collaborate with the District Nurse Leader or building‑based School Nurse, students, families, and staff to write Individual Health, Medication, and Emergency Care Plans, and contribute to other plans (504, IEP) as needed.
  • Manage medical records with accurate and precise record keeping.
  • Organize and implement all state‑mandated programs, such as immunization and physical surveillance/compliance and school health screenings.
  • Review and coordinate medical needs for all field trips/fieldwork as needed.
  • Assess, provide basic treatment, and refer as requested for staff and visitors, including providing and/or completing staff injury/incident report forms.
  • Complete records and reports for local, regional, and statewide needs as required.
  • Along with the administrative team, monitor and respond to infectious illness outbreaks in the community and collaborate with the local board of health as needed.
  • Maintain a daily record of all nurses' office visits and activities using a web‑based electronic health record program.
  • Maintain current information in comprehensive school health records for each student based on nursing assessment and medical information, using web‑based programs.
  • Provide directions and assistance to substitute school nurses.
  • Attend continuing education activities related to current clinical knowledge and professional issues.
  • Perform other duties as required.

$40 to $50 Per Hour

Job Requirements
  • For LPNs: hold a degree from an accredited LPN program; for RNs: hold an RN Certificate or Associate Degree in Nursing.
  • Valid MA license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse.
  • Current CPR certification and ability to maintain certification from a recognized provider (i.e., American Heart Association or American Red Cross).
  • Complete BUSHIELD School Health Screenings and SBIRT online courses; or be able to complete these trainings within 30 days of hire.
  • Be able to contribute as a member of the health services team, with excellent skills in prioritizing, organizing, and working under pressure.
  • Ability to work well with others and to communicate health needs to students, teachers, and the community while maintaining student and staff confidentiality.
  • Possess basic computer skills for documentation and communication.
  • Ability to move from each school as needed.
  • Ability to be flexible with start and stop times based on school building needs.
  • School nursing or pediatric nursing experience is a plus.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Associate degree preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
