Seasonal Habitat Management Field Technicians (260003UA)
Position within the Department of Fish and Game (DFG). This role focuses on habitat management and invasive plant species control on Coastal Plain Ponds across Massachusetts. The position is seasonal and funded by a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Grant, with work primarily in southeastern Massachusetts.
About the AgencyThe Department of Fish and Wildlife of Massachusetts manages conservation of freshwater fish and wildlife, including endangered plants and animals, and restores, protects, and manages land for wildlife.
Responsibilities- Identify and document invasive plant species and infestations.
- Control target invasive plant infestations using MA-approved herbicides.
- Use hand tools and power tools, with appropriate safety equipment, to cut and remove unwanted vegetation.
- Conduct public presentations to local user groups and communities.
- Work with local landowners and groups to obtain written access approval.
- Collaborate with State Botanists on rare species surveys and protection actions.
- Use mapping software, GPS, and create files and maps to document infestations, treatment units, and monitoring transects/points with ArcGIS.
- Maintain field notebooks, photographs, data records, and assist with an end-of-season report.
- Must pass a pesticide licensing exam and obtain a MA Pesticide Applicator License before the start date.
- Comfortable spending long periods of time outdoors.
- Valid driver’s license to potentially drive state vehicles and trailers.
- Ability to carry ~40 lbs. of field equipment and 35–40 lb. backpack sprayer for extended periods on uneven terrain.
- Ability to cut and remove brush and trees off pond shorelines up to 100 ft.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Experience with GPS, mapping, ArcGIS, and technology is desirable.
- Previous experience giving presentations to the general public is desirable.
- Previous coursework in biological or environmental sciences is desirable.
- In‑state travel will be required; willingness to use personal vehicle.
- Applicants who already have a MA Pesticide Applicator License must submit a scan of it with their application.
