Overview

The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University provides 24-hour care for pets 365 days of the year. Since 1985, we have offered high quality medical care, consultation, referral and emergency veterinary services for the care of dogs, cats and exotic pets. The Internal Medicine Service at Foster Hospital for Small Animals provides advanced diagnostic, therapeutic, and comprehensive medical care for dogs and cats with complex or chronic diseases.

Led by board-certified specialists in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM), the service works collaboratively with highly skilled veterinary technicians, residents, interns, students, and support staff to deliver exceptional patient care within a state-of-the-art teaching hospital environment.

The service manages a diverse caseload involving disorders of the gastrointestinal, respiratory, hepatic, renal, endocrine, infectious, and immune-mediated systems, as well as critically ill patients requiring intensive medical management. Through close collaboration with specialists in other disciplines, the Internal Medicine Service provides comprehensive, patient-centered care for some of the most challenging veterinary cases. The service is committed to excellence in patient care, education, and clinical innovation.

Faculty and staff play a vital role in training future veterinarians and veterinary technicians while fostering a collaborative culture of learning, mentorship, and continuous professional development.

What You’ll Do

Internal Medicine Veterinary Technician is an integral member of a collaborative specialty care team, delivering exceptional nursing care to patients receiving advanced internal medicine services within the Small Animal Hospital. This role supports the comprehensive management of internal medicine cases by assisting with outpatient appointments, inpatient treatments, diagnostic testing, advanced procedures, imaging, and technician-led visits. In addition to providing high-quality patient care, the technician serves as a clinical mentor, supporting the education and training of veterinary students, interns, and fellow technicians.

Key teaching responsibilities include instruction in low stress handling, venipuncture, intravenous catheter placement, diagnostic sample collection, and inpatient treatment protocols. This position requires strong organizational skills, the ability to effectively prioritize a dynamic caseload, and exceptional attention to detail in a fast-paced clinical environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication and client service skills, fostering positive relationships with patients, clients, referring veterinarians, clinicians, and colleagues.

Essential functions in this role will be:

Patient Care - Provide high quality patient care including the following:

  • Provide care to patients consistent with our hospital's standards of minimizing fear, anxiety, stress, and pain.
  • Monitor, manage and implement treatment plans for both outpatients and inpatients as ordered by clinicians to insure prompt delivery of high-quality patient care.
  • Collaborate with administrative and clinical care team members throughout the hospital to coordinate and prioritize patient care.
  • Complete and submit diagnostic testing as ordered by clinicians including bench-top lab tests.
  • Provide technical assistance for clinical, academic and research functions/activities.
  • Assist clinicians in maintaining complete medical records for all patients.
  • Cross train in all medical procedures (e.g., endoscopy, fluoroscopy, feeding tube placement, bone marrow aspirates and more) as well as other specialty services including anesthesia to provide coverage as required.
  • Ensure adequate record keeping and the submissions of proper charges for cases.
  • Prepare treatment regimens, pharmacy prescriptions/refill requests, estimates and processes associated with drop off patients.
