Position: Lab Supervisor-Certified, Core Lab Central Processing 40hr, First Shift Flex
Location: Bloomingdale

Position:
Laboratory Supervisor (UMass Memorial Health). Exemption Status:
Exempt. Hiring Range: $31.31 - $.

Schedule:

Monday through Friday, On Call Required, Weekends (Saturday and Sunday) scheduled. Shift: 1st shift flex 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM. 40 hours per week.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for day‑to‑day supervision of staff, laboratory testing, and workflow in the assigned laboratory section.
  • Ensure laboratory results are produced in accordance with established laboratory procedures.
  • Coordinate communication of technical and result issues to lab management and operations leadership.
  • Provide advanced technical support for staff and actively participate in quality assurance management in the laboratory.
  • Oversee laboratory staff: make recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and related actions.
  • Resolve grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities.
  • Complete documentation of competency, sign off on new employee’s probationary period and annual staff competencies as required by CAP.
  • Coordinate scheduling, staffing, and emergent coverage needs for all campus laboratory locations.
  • Active participant in the management team facilitating implementation and communication of departmental goals.
  • Make recommendations for capital purchases, staff and/or process changes to be included in the budget consideration process.
  • Ensure day‑to‑day decisions are consistent with the laboratory’s financial goals and objectives.
  • Write, edit, and organize new and existing procedures; take an active role in the procedure review process to ensure consistency with laboratory practices.
  • Ensure compliance with all laboratory quality and safety policies.
  • Ensure all periodic instrument maintenance is performed; serve as a laboratory resource for advanced instrument repair/troubleshooting.
  • Provide guidance and appropriate follow‑through to other staff members for complex or unusual test results.
  • Facilitate completion of validation studies for new equipment or assays; develop staff training plans for new equipment and assays.
  • Ensure all proficiency testing is performed according to established laboratory and CAP procedures; review all CAP proficiency results and lead investigations into CAP PT exceptions.
Standard Supervisor Level Responsibilities
  • Supervise assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training.
  • Make recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions.
  • Resolve grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities.
  • Coordinate the assignment of tasks and help resolve technical and operational problems.
  • Evaluate the impact of solutions to ensure goals are achieved.
  • Provide effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation and foster effective integration with system‑wide initiatives.
  • Encourage and support diverse views and approaches, demonstrate Standards of Respect, and contribute to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
  • Integrate diversity into departmental objectives such as hiring, promotions, training, vendor selections, etc.
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives and demonstrate use of quality improvement in daily operations.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies such as Joint Commission, DPH, etc., and develop and maintain procedures necessary to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure that department complies with hospital established policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Ensure adequate equipment and supplies for department and develop and maintain established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations and requirements; perform similar or related duties as required or directed.
