Position Overview
Seasonal Wildlife Technician – responsible for monitoring and managing common loon populations throughout Massachusetts. The position involves conducting field surveys, entering data, providing direction to volunteers, interacting with the public, and traveling throughout the state. Some weekend work may be required.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct field surveys for common loons by foot or kayak to collect, enter, and review data to determine nesting status and success.
- Read and record color bands on loons to identify individuals.
- Enter and manage data in an electronic database.
- Manage nesting rafts for loons (deploying and maintaining).
- Disseminate information on nesting loons to the public.
- Assist with writing end‑of‑season reports.
- Conduct other tasks as assigned.
- Working knowledge of ornithology, biology, ecology, and related sciences.
- Previous field work conducting bird surveys and experience with bird identification.
- Experience using kayaks on lakes or ponds.
- Basic map and compass skills; ability to use handheld GPS units.
- Experience communicating wildlife management and research (orally and in writing) to the public and professionals.
- Knowledge of scientific research methodologies including hypothesis testing, research design, data collection, and data analysis.
- Experience using computer programs for organizing and communicating wildlife‑related data (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Ability and willingness to work long hours in the field under challenging conditions such as physical activity across uneven terrain, exposure to ticks, and movement through thorny vegetation and poison ivy.
- Increased knowledge of ornithology, biology, ecology, and related sciences.
- Knowledge of the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
- Knowledge of the types and uses of agency forms.
The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) and the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) collaborate to protect Massachusetts’s environmental resources and wildlife. The Seasonal Wildlife Technician works under the supervision of the State Ornithologist in the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife.
