Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Atomic Physics and Precision Measurements

Full‑time (40 hours/week) two‑year term position in the Physics and Astronomy Department at Williams College, with the possibility of a third‑year renewal. The laboratory, under the guidance of Professor Tiku Majumder, focuses on high‑precision diode laser spectroscopy of heavy atoms to test atomic theory and investigate fundamental physics. Successful candidates will help lead the laboratory’s work in experimental design and new apparatus construction, theoretical modeling, detailed data analysis, and dissemination of results through talks, conference presentations, and peer‑reviewed publications. Candidates are encouraged to propose new experiments that test recent theoretical developments and explore phenomena beyond atomic physics.

The position provides an opportunity to engage with undergraduate students at all stages of their education, including senior honors projects, the teaching laboratory, and the month‑long January teaching term. The department graduates 25 majors per year, with more than half entering Ph.D. programs, and has five experimental physicists, four theorists, and three astronomers, all maintaining active research portfolios. The College also hosts three NSF‑funded AMO experiment groups.

• Doctoral degree in Physics or a related field.
• Strong background in experimental physics; experience with laser and atomic physics techniques is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with computing, modeling, data collection, signal processing, and data analysis tools standard in this field.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with junior researchers.
