Marine Science Internship

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic undergraduate student interested in completing a marine science internship at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). Successful candidates will be quick learners who are detail-oriented, responsible, and capable of working independently. This position requires diligence, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to producing high-quality work. Many tasks involve the microscopic analysis and enumeration of environmental samples and can be repetitive;

therefore, applicants should be prepared to approach all responsibilities with care, consistency, and a positive attitude. Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program and must have at least one academic semester remaining after the completion of the internship. Students graduating in December 2026 or earlier are not eligible for this position.

One internship position is available to support research on the population dynamics and toxicity of harmful algal bloom (HAB) species. The student will contribute to several ongoing projects, with a primary focus on analyzing water and sediment samples collected in the Arctic for the presence of Alexandrium catenella cells and cysts. This work aims to improve our understanding of the distribution of HAB species in the Arctic and how ocean warming may influence the timing and extent of future blooms.

Laboratory responsibilities will include:

  • Processing, analyzing, and enumerating filtered water samples for Alexandrium catenella cells using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) techniques
  • Processing, analyzing, and enumerating sediment samples for Alexandrium cysts
  • Maintaining phytoplankton cultures, including media preparation, culture observation, and culture transfers
  • Assisting researchers with related projects as needed
  • Entering and organizing data in spreadsheets and providing weekly progress updates

Through this experience, the student will develop a broad range of laboratory and data management skills, gain exposure to Arctic marine research, and become part of the WHOI scientific community.

Fixed Hourly range: $19.91-$25.50

The hourly rate provided for this position reflects the set base pay for new hires. Final level placement will be determined based on factors such as relevant skills, experience, and qualifications, as well as internal equity and market conditions. In addition to base rate, casual employees are eligible to receive casual benefits.

WHOI accepts applications on a rolling basis - applications will be reviewed as they are received, and we encourage you to submit your application as soon as possible to ensure full consideration. While we will continue to review applications until the position is filled, early applicants may have an advantage in the selection process.
