Location: Woods Hole

Research Associate

In addition, the Research Associate will oversee lab-based physiology experiments and lead the analysis and publication of the resulting data from field and laboratory efforts. This position may require labwork and fieldwork in Florida.

Essential Functions & Duties
  • Configure and deploy Imaging Flow Cytobot (IFCB) sensors for in situ and lab-based surveillance of Karenia brevis and other phytoplankton taxa
  • IFCB analysis of phytoplankton samples for Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) with a focus on Karenia brevis and other dominant phytoplankton species, using machine-learning for automated image classification
  • Participate in multi-day field and laboratory experiments, including pre- and post-monitoring and data synthesis
  • Genetic analysis of Karenia brevis in field and lab samples via quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) with a focus on taxonomic and programmed cell death markers
  • Work well independently and in an interdisciplinary group
  • Writing peer-reviewed publications and presenting research results at national and international scientific meetings
Required Experience & Education
  • PhD in Biology, Ecology, or a related discipline
  • Prior postdoctoral or professional experience in HAB science.
  • Prior laboratory and field experience related to monitoring and management of Karenia brevis blooms in Florida.
  • Prior laboratory experience in assessing growth and physiology of cultivated HAB species, including taxa within the Kareniaceae.
  • Prior experience with configuration and deployment of Imaging Flow Cytobot (IFCB) sensors for monitoring K. brevis and other phytoplankton in Florida
  • Demonstrated experience in utilizing genetic markers to assess HAB population structure and physiological status, including laboratory and data analysis, and the publication of these data.
  • Prior first author publications on HAB science or management with a focus on K. brevis.
Preferred Experience & Education
  • Previous successful experience working with interdisciplinary groups
  • Excellent science writing and communication skills
  • Experience with multivariate statistics and experimental design.
  • Knowledge of dinoflagellate physiology, life cycle, and taxonomy.
