Summary

Under the general direction of the Security Manager, the Security Officer protects life and property of all persons on hospital premises and patrols hospital buildings and grounds to prevent fire, theft, and vandalism. The officer secures, unlocks, and protects hospital buildings, responds to security needs of hospital personnel, patients, and visitors, and participates in performance improvement activities. Responsibilities
  • Protect life and property of all persons on hospital premises.
  • Deescalate all potentially tense situations and immediately contact local police prior to any physical altercation.
  • Patrol hospital buildings and grounds to prevent fire, theft, and vandalism.
  • Diligently report any suspicious activity and investigate accidents, incidents, and criminal acts.
  • Secure, lock, and protect hospital buildings and grounds.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to emergency and non‑emergency situations.
  • Assist hospital staff in de‑escalation of tense situations and support the safety of staff.
  • Ensure only authorized persons are admitted onto hospital property.
  • Assist with inquiries made by patients, visitors, or other employees.
  • Maintain current information in daily activity reports, incident reports, lost and found logs, etc.
  • Serve as a member of the emergency response team and respond to codes appropriately.
  • Report all safety and fire hazards, investigate incidents of unusual circumstances, and report all incidents to supervisor.
  • Support all fire/life safety/emergency management drills and education initiatives.
  • Document incident reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Follow appropriate investigative procedures.
  • Respond quickly to all areas of the hospital and complete mandatory education requirements in a timely manner.
  • Manage access control at various entrances, ensuring all staff, patients, visitors, and vendors are authorized for entry.
  • Assist with the operation of security systems: CCTV, access control, and incident reporting.
  • Assist in maintaining regulatory requirements, including state and federal regulations.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Maintain a cooperative working relationship with physicians, staff, and vendors.
  • Remain on site during emergency situations, as required by senior management.
  • Remain alert at all times, notifying employees, patients, and others of potential threats or situations requiring immediate attention.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Two to five (2-5) years of experience in law enforcement, security operations, or a related field.
  • Experience in a health care setting preferred.
  • Successfully clear a background check, including a criminal record search.
  • Use or possession of a firearm and/or other weapons prohibited.
  • Excellent knowledge of public safety and security procedures/protocols preferred.
  • Ability to obtain state‑required security officer credentials as needed.
  • Ability to perform duties independently.
  • Clear communication skills in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Basic computer knowledge and skills required; experience with Microsoft Office preferred.
  • Ability to function calmly and competently in high‑stress situations and handle mental and emotional stamina in situations involving death or multiple patients.
  • Honesty, alertness, and discipline.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 100 pounds.
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities.
Education

High school diploma or equivalent (GED). A current Basic Life Support (CPR) certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association, or a CPI certification, preferred.

Working Conditions

The job requires frequent walking, standing, and use of hands to reach, climb, and balance. The employee may lift up to 100 pounds and may work outdoors and under extreme weather conditions. Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens, toxic chemicals, dust, and infectious diseases is possible. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception. Protective equipment used includes safety eye glasses, ear plugs or mufflers, dust mask, face shields, gloves, and boots.

Pay

Range

$19.03–$31.39 per hour.
