Position provides skilled labor and equipment operation functions for the Highway Department.

• Serves as Mechanic for the Highway Division;
• Maintains fleet of earth moving and excavation equipment, heavy duty dump trucks, pickup trucks, street sweeper, snow removal equipment, specialty equipment and mowers;
• Repairs and maintain vehicles; performs technical diagnostics, complex, extensive and general maintenance and repairs;
• Fabricates, welds and fits steel to make repairs;
• Maintains a library of service manuals for all vehicles and equipment;
• Maintains inventory of spare parts and tools;
• Coordinates repairs beyond the scope or capacity of this position;
• Recommends purchase of mechanical supplies, tools, vehicle parts and components, and equipment;
• Operates a variety of vehicles and equipment as required to perform required functions for the Highway Department, including street sweeper, lawn mower, backhoe, excavator, loader, grader, grinder, snow plow, and others;
• Picks up litter along roadways, mows lawn, trims trees, and ensures for the cleanliness and maintenance of town streets;
• Patches streets, sidewalks, and cleans drainage lines;
• Installs or repairs pipes for drainage, installs catch basins, removes stumps and rocks;
• Repairs bridges, fences, and guardrails;
• Loads bulk materials on trucks, such as salt, sand, or other materials as needed for construction projects;
• Grades dirt roadways as maintenance procedure, grades roadways in preparation for re-paving;
• Cuts brush along roadways to keep overgrowth from inhibiting visibility, cuts, and maintains brush at town owned facilities and parks; feeds material into grinder or chipper for disposal;
• May be required to supervise the work of employees assigned to a work crew;
• Ensures that all safety precautions are followed while performing work;
• Performs a CDL circle check; lubricates, adds oil, inflates tires and otherwise services equipment to ensure proper operation; reports any malfunctions to supervisor, and may assist in making minor repairs and maintenance;
• Prepares for and responds to seasonal challenges including snow removal, snow and storm water, flooded areas, trees down, construction projects, and repair and maintenance of equipment and machinery;
• Participates in all snow and ice removal operations and other emergencies;
• Performs a variety of related duties.

Under general direction, employee works independently to plan and prioritize the majority of work, in accordance with standard practices. Employee is expected to solve most problems of detail or unusual situations by adapting methods or interpreting instructions accordingly.

The nature of work or the operation of large or complex equipment means that errors could be have larger consequences such as significant monetary losses, waste of material, damage to buildings, equipment or unsafe conditions.

The work involves numerous practices, procedures, or instructions that govern the work and which requires additional interpretation. Judgment is needed to locate, select and apply the most pertinent practice, procedure or guideline.

The work consists of a variety of duties which generally follow standardized practices, procedures and protocols. The sequence of work, technology needed and/or the procedures followed vary according to the nature of the work to be performed.

Relationships are primarily with co-workers, vendors and the vehicle service department managers, involving frequent explanation, discussion or interpretation of practices and procedures, in order to render service, plan or coordinate work efforts, or resolve problems.

High School diploma and two–three years of related public works and/or mechanical experience. Training and certification as a Mechanic is required; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Required:

Valid Class B CDL driver’s license, and Hoisting License 2B.
