Overview

This position has a schedule of Monday - Friday; 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM at one work location.

The Department of Facilities Services is responsible for the efficient and cost effective operations, maintenance and management of all Tufts University facilities consisting of approximately 5 million square feet of space on three campuses (Somerville/Medford, Grafton, and Boston).

A broad range of services are provided to support the University campuses including: facility maintenance by all trades, capital maintenance, information technology systems for operations (work control, time capture, preventative maintenance), energy and utilities systems, recycling and waste management, event services, residential facilities coordination, grounds maintenance and facility condition assessment and tracking. Facilities Services plays a critical role in planning for the $30M/year deferred maintenance investment.

Related functions, which require close coordination with this department, are public and environmental health and safety, planning, design and construction of capital and deferred maintenance projects including major repairs, renovation and new construction.

What You’ll Do

Reporting to facilities management, the Vehicle Equipment Mechanic is responsible for the repair of the University's vehicle automobiles, trucks, busses, grounds equipment, lawn mowers, golf carts, tractors. Position requires experience and knowledge in the operation, maintenance and repair of internal combustion and hybrid engines and vehicle and engine accessories including the electrical and cooling, hydraulic and power-takeoff systems and engine driven vehicles and equipment.

This position is considered essential as defined in the Tufts University Employee Handbook.

  • Following standard operating procedures as continuously defined by the university, complying with safety norms and regulations and meeting reasonable deadlines for efficiency, and performing more difficult and complex types of duties including maintenance, repair and overhaul of vehicles and a wide variety of specialty and miscellaneous equipment, including but not limited to the following:
    • Coordinate daily activities of the campus motor pool.
    • Provide repairs for vehicles for and not limited to the following:
      Class II and III automobiles, trucks, vans, busses and golf carts.
    • Perform tune-ups, grease vehicles, test pollution controls, test electrical equipment, pneumatic, hydraulic systems. etc.
    • Service and replace, but not limited, to the following: clutches, brakes, mufflers, front-end parts, electrical and hydraulic systems.
    • Service and repair hydraulic and electrical systems.
    • Maintain and repair snow equipment including but not limited to the following: sanders and rotary and reel lawn mowers.
    • Scrape, sand and paint parts.
    • Pump gas and maintain distribution records.
    • Assist in training employees in the same or similar position.
    • Perform similar or related duties as required.
    • Safely handle cleaning lubricating materials and fuels with hazardous content.
    • Supervise one or more Utility Worker II and/or student employees.
    • Driving vehicles / using tools necessary to do the job.
    • Capable of leading small teams on assignments as necessary.
    • Responsible for the daily preparation of the parts and tools for each day’s activities.
    • Completes work in a timely and workman like manner.
    • Coordinates work functions with fellow workers.
    • Coordinate with assigned manager for the use of non-stock University tools and ensure they are returned to the appropriate place in a timely manner.
