Job Description

Effective October 1, 2025, the Ohio Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services has transitioned to its new name—the Ohio Department of Behavioral Health.

What you’ll do at DBH
  • Patrol campus grounds, buildings (interior and exterior checks) on foot & in car, ensuring safety of patients/clients, visitors, & employees.
  • Assist in emergency/disaster situations (e.g., evacuation of buildings, inclement weather, hospital codes such as Code Black, Silver, Red).
  • Make professional efforts to prevent/deter criminal activities, enforce Ohio Revised Code (criminal laws), and testify in court as required.
  • Check identity of persons on grounds and their business/needs; monitor traffic and parking, issue tickets as necessary.
  • Investigate/review alleged criminal complaints.
  • Make inquiries on security/safety issues, document findings, and communicate with hospital administration regarding sensitive issues.
  • Screen newly admitted patient(s) and their property for contraband via police policy; check/log valuables with the business office.
  • Assist in interior clinical service functions (respond to Code Violets, Code Blue, etc.), aid nursing, medical, or direct care personnel in emergent incidents; assist with crisis interventions.
  • Monitor and screen all visitors and returning patients; escort, assist visitors; transport forensic Level 1, 2, or Police Hold patient(s); provide assistance with mechanical problems.

This is an hourly position covered by the State of Ohio Unit 2 bargaining unit (union), with a pay range of #8 or #10 on the Unit 2 Pay Range Schedule.

Unless required by any applicable union contract and/or requirements of the Ohio Revised Code, the selected candidate will begin at Step 1 of the pay range schedule listed above, with opportunity for pay increase after six months of satisfactory performance and then yearly raise thereafter.

Additional Salary / Appointment Information
  • Police Officer 1, pay range 8 ($23.84/hour) to Police Officer 2, pay range 10 ($27.43/hour), based on experience.
  • Schedule may vary for second/third shift.
  • $1.25 shift differential pay for 2nd and 3rd shift, full‑time, permanent employees.
