The Middle School Art Teacher fosters creativity, artistic expression, and appreciation for the visual arts among students in grades 6–8. This role involves designing engaging, standards-aligned lessons that develop students’ technical skills, critical thinking, and cultural awareness in art. As part of a charter school environment, the teacher supports the school’s mission, often integrating arts across the curriculum and contributing to a collaborative, innovative culture.
Key Responsibilities Instruction & Curriculum- Plan and deliver engaging art lessons aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Visual Arts
- Teach a variety of media and techniques (drawing, painting, sculpture, digital art, etc.)
- Differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs and learning styles
- Integrate art history, cultural context, and cross-curricular connections
- Maintain a safe, organized, and inclusive art classroom
- Establish clear expectations for behavior, materials use, and cleanup
- Promote creativity, respect, and constructive critique among students
- Assess student work using rubrics and performance-based evaluations
- Provide timely, constructive feedback to support artistic development
- Track student progress and maintain accurate records
- Collaborate with teachers to integrate arts into other subject areas
- Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and school events
- Organize student art displays, exhibitions, or showcases
- Support the mission and goals of the charter school
- Contribute to school initiatives, clubs, or extracurricular activities (e.g., art club)
- Engage with families through conferences, communication, and events
- Bachelor’s degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, or related field
- Eligibility for or possession of a North Carolina teaching license (or willingness to obtain)
- Experience working with middle school-aged students
- Valid NC Educator License in Art (K–12)
- Experience in a charter or innovative school setting
- Familiarity with project-based learning or arts integration
- Strong classroom management skills
- Strong knowledge of art techniques and art history
- Ability to inspire and engage adolescents
- Classroom management and organization
- Creativity, flexibility, and collaboration
- Effective communication with students, staff, and families
