Position Summary
The Senior Underwriter is responsible for evaluating and determining the eligibility of loan applications. Responsibilities include analyzing and verifying loan applications, evaluating risks, and making loan eligibility decisions. The Senior Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for exercising sound judgment based on detailed analysis and ensuring all documentation is in compliance with the relevant regulations and collaborates with borrowers and other parties involved in the mortgage process as well as oversee and assist the managers.
EssentialFunctions
- Handle complex underwriting decisions requiring senior knowledge and analysing loan risk.
- Authorise and underwrite loans.
- Review and verify loan applications and supporting documentation.
- Prepare reports on assessment findings.
- Make loan eligibility decisions and approve or reject applications.
- Review and specify loan conditions as necessary.
- Document and effectively communicate reasons for the approval or rejection of loans.
- Maintain regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
- Comply with industry-related regulations, requirements, and state/federal laws as applicable to the job duties of this position.
- May provide training and direction to team members to assure clear understanding of compliance and lending guidelines, particularly with those intending to eventually serve in an Underwriter role.
- Return applications with additional documentation to the loan officer for review.
- Maintain compliance with and adhere to all state and federal regulations and bank policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act, FACT ACT, Community Reinvestment Act, and EEO/AA/Fair Employment Practices.
- All other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Bachelor’s Degree in business, banking, or finance preferred.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of mortgage underwriting experience.
- Senior knowledge of mortgage loan processing and relevant legal regulations.
- Approved DE, VA, FHA, USDA approved designations.
- Proficiency in MS Office.
- Understanding and familiarity with Encompass LOS required.
- High degree of detail orientation.
- Professional and effective verbal and written communication.
- Ability to develop strong relationships across teams.
- Capability to think holistically with business intuition.
- Knowledge of the mortgage industry and terminology.
- Must be flexible, high energy, and able to pivot as needs and importance of projects change.
- Strong work ethic and discipline to develop and maintain excellent production and quality results.
- Proficient understanding of Encompass and Encompass closing documents.
In terms of an 8-hour workday, “occasional” equals 1% to 33%, “frequent” equals 34% to 66%, and “continuous” equals 67% to 100%. However, some duties are performed monthly, annually, or sporadically throughout the year and are essential functions.
