Job SummaryThe Nurse Clinician assists in evaluating care given by unit staff and in meeting staff learning needs. They evaluate nursing care delivery for patients, identify patients with complex nursing care requirements, provide education to staff, patients, and family members, and develop and participate in educational programs. They consult with nursing and medical colleagues and other health personnel to effectively deliver nursing services to patients.
Nursing Practice Duties- Maintain and enhance education and clinical expertise within the nursing department.
- Educate nursing personnel on new nursing practices and revised documentation systems.
- Train nursing/hospital staff on use of computerized bedside documentation systems and assist in implementation.
- Assess patients’ physical, emotional, psycho‑social status and diagnose patient problems using NANDA taxonomy.
- Utilize PAIE charting appropriately and teach RN’s and LPN’s applicable principles.
- Maintain the documentation and record‑keeping system in compliance with nursing, hospital, and external agency requirements; audit staff use of electronic documentation and prepare reports.
- Work independently and cooperatively with hospital committees, developing and maintaining guidelines for new electronic record‑keeping within documentation systems.
- Maintain computerized files on guidelines and revise/distribute guidelines as indicated.
- Perform tasks/assignments to support system implementation, such as collating manuals and preparing educational packets for in‑services.
- Serve as a resource for nursing personnel in assessing patient and family status; provide consultation to the interdisciplinary team.
- Initiate patient care conferences and coordinate monthly interdisciplinary team care plans and assessments.
- Collaborate with health care team to assess patient progress; direct and evaluate nursing interventions; oversee care delivery as needed to ensure quality care.
- Utilize hospital resources and other health care agencies.
- Communicate clearly and appropriately both verbally and in writing with patients, families, co‑workers, and other health care professionals.
- Develop, update, and revise unit‑specific policies and procedures based on clinical practice standards.
- Assist and implement corrective action plans with the QA team.
- Implement new or revised policies and procedures.
- Assist in establishing and evaluating standards of nursing practice.
- Interpret and implement procedures, policies, and nursing care objectives for patients, families, and staff.
- Participate on committees as assigned.
- Assist the Nurse Coordinator in evaluating and preparing par stock, supplies, and equipment.
- Ensure proper completion of documentation, including the Comprehensive Interdisciplinary Patient Care Plan.
- Participate in QA/IP activities of the unit; prepare reports and corrective action as required.
- Meet clinical learning needs of nursing staff under supervision of the Nurse Coordinator.
- Assist with staff development by implementing patient conferences, teaching rounds, and team conferences; utilize continuing education resources.
- Plan, develop, and implement orientations and unit‑specific educational programs.
- Assume responsibility for own continuing education using formal and informal resources; obtain and maintain Med/Surg nursing certification.
