The Business Development Representative is responsible for identifying, pursuing, and securing new business opportunities for the company, as well as re-establishing relationships with former clients. This includes researching potential buyers, conducting outreach, qualifying leads, and developing strong, trust-based relationships that convert into long-term business.
The role also involves re-engaging lapsed accounts by understanding previous challenges, presenting updated solutions, and working to rebuild partnerships. Success in this position requires expanding the company's customer base, communicating value effectively, and ensuring a seamless transition from initial prospecting to order fulfillment through collaboration with internal teams.
Essential Functions- Achieve and exceed new business acquisition and revenue growth targets.
- Conduct outbound prospecting through calls, emails, and other outreach channels to identify and qualify new leads.
- Reconnect with former customers to understand prior purchasing activity and present updated offerings, solutions, and value propositions.
- Research markets, competitors, and customer segments to identify new growth opportunities.
- Maintain a robust pipeline of prospects, documenting all activity and progress within the CRM.
- Conduct site visits or virtual meetings with potential customers to assess needs and present company solutions.
- Attend networking events, industry functions, and trade shows to enhance brand visibility and generate leads.
- Follow up on digital marketing engagement to convert interest into sales opportunities.
- Support customer tagging appointments for newly acquired clients as needed.
- Ensure accuracy in quoting, pricing, and delivery charge assessments.
- Provide nursery tours to prospective and returning customers.
- Participate in sales meetings and provide insights on lead generation, market activity, and industry trends.
- Assist with promotional initiatives, seasonal campaigns, and special programs to broaden customer reach.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proven ability to prospect, cold call, and build relationships with new contacts.
- Consultative sales approach with strong problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to manage a high-volume pipeline and juggle multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
- Willingness to meet clients on-site or off-site as required.
- Self-motivated, results-driven, and able to work independently.
- Understanding of—or commitment to learning—horticultural products and industry trends.
- Experience in sales, business development, or account management.
- Proficiency with CRM software (minimum 1 year required).
- Horticulture experience (minimum 1 year preferred).
- Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask.
- Team-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
