The Fleet Mechanic Lead advises Mechanic I and Mechanic II and performs inspections, diagnoses, repairs and services mechanical issues on City vehicles and equipment. The incumbent performs work in compliance with established safety procedures, meeting or exceeding industry and manufacturer estimated work times. The Fleet Mechanic Lead is responsible for the regular maintenance and upkeep of City Vehicles and Equipment related assets, assisting the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor in documentation and data collection and communication with the Director of Public Works in the Fleet Maintenance Supervisors absence.

Functions
  • Prepare and submit service logs and other documentation as necessary.
  • Repair vehicles and order parts needed for repairs.
  • Lubricate vehicles and equipment, change oil and replace filters and air cleaners as needed; drain and flush radiators and refill, winterize vehicles with anti‑freeze as needed.
  • Check oil and perform routine maintenance and services.
  • Replace plugs and plug wires as needed.
  • Change or repair flats and worn‑out tires as needed.
  • Check and order fuel, oil and hydraulic filters.
  • Ensure work areas are clean and all shop equipment is in good working condition.
  • Complete other duties or tasks as directed or assigned.
  • Organize and conduct work order scheduling sessions with Departmental personnel to plan, prioritize and schedule routine and non‑routine corrective, preventive and predictive maintenance activities in compliance with established Departmental policies and procedures to ensure the effective and efficient operations of the Fleet Maintenance Department; release work orders after shop capacity levels are determined.
  • Schedule and coordinate the preventative and repair maintenance activities of light, medium, heavy‑weight and specialized vehicles and related equipment with the Fleet Maintenance Department and other City of Maumelle Departments and outside vendors based on demand, workload, parts, and materials availability to ensure the effective and efficient operations of the Fleet Maintenance Department.
  • Coordinate with the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor to monitor the Current and Future Fleet Management system to ensure work orders are completed in a timely manner; maintain equipment history to ensure accurate and up‑to‑date accountability of all equipment; review system reports; monitor and analyze backlog and ensure all planned work is prioritized to address backlogged work orders.
  • Coordinate with appropriate personnel to ensure an adequate amount of automotive parts are ordered and delivered to appropriate shop in advance of scheduled preventative maintenance and corrective work orders; develop consumption models to improve inventory accuracy; ensure appropriate reserves are maintained for planned and unplanned maintenance work; review work orders to ensure that inventory was updated and removed from Fleet Management system daily to ensure that adequate amount of inventory is on hand for upcoming maintenance and repair work;

    analyze inventory levels and product demands to determine reorder levels to ensure product availability and minimize inventory costs.
  • Provide assistance to appropriate personnel in training departmental personnel in the utilization of the Current and Future management systems, Skills Development, and Job Safety Training.
  • Determine tentative preventative maintenance schedules for City vehicles based on specific criteria; modify preventative maintenance schedules as needed; distribute schedule to appropriate department liaisons.
  • Determine preliminary diagnostic issues with vehicles and equipment based upon description of problems provided by driver/operators; review vehicle checklists prepared by departmental liaisons to identify additional repair maintenance required; enter applicable work orders into Current and Future management systems based on checklist information.
