Job Summary
The Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department is responsible for coordinating and delivering comprehensive nursing care to patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric. This role involves performing patient assessments, triage using the Emergency Severity Index, administering medications and treatments, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure efficient and high-quality patient care in a fast-paced emergency setting.
Responsibilities- Plan, implement, and evaluate patient care across all age groups in the Emergency Department.
- Perform triage according to the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) 5-level triage process.
- Document nursing care and patient responses accurately using medical terminology in legally compliant records.
- Collaborate with providers, peers, ancillary departments, and outside agencies to optimize patient care and flow.
- Coordinate care for multiple patients, prioritizing to ensure timely and quality care delivery.
- Communicate patient needs clearly and advocate for patients through appropriate channels.
- Participate in professional development and complete required education and in-services timely.
- Assess patient and family discharge needs and provide appropriate education.
- Monitor life support and technical equipment; perform routine and complex treatments including medication administration and emergency resuscitation.
- Insert and administer IV fluids, blood products, and other parenteral fluids safely.
- Respond calmly and efficiently to crises, directing others and delegating tasks appropriately.
- Comply with legal consent, transfer protocols, and patient rights legislation.
- Maintain equipment and supplies, ensuring rooms are stocked and checklists completed before shift end.
- Participate in educational activities for pre-hospital emergency providers and students.
- Demonstrate proficiency in computerized patient documentation.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Wisconsin Registered Nursing license or active Compact Licensure.
- Two-year degree in nursing required; four-year degree preferred.
- Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC required.
- Minimum of 2 years relevant nursing experience.
- Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail.
- ATCN certification preferred.
- Experience with emergency department nursing and patient flow management.
- Work in a high-stress, fast-paced emergency department environment.
- Ability to respond quickly and calmly in crisis situations.
- Must be able to perform duties across the full age spectrum from pediatric to geriatric patients.
- Full-time position with three 12-hour shifts per week.
- Shift times include 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM and 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
