Independently performs detailed phases of design engineering work for a project of moderate size and complexity to design assignments that satisfy the requirements of building designs in accordance with applicable governing codes. This requires the application of standard design engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria where the scope is already outlined in the form of contract drawings, specifications, one-line drawings and component estimates derived.
Competent in all conventional aspects of design engineering and be capable of planning and conducting tasks requiring independent judgment in the evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard design engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria. Develops designs that require innovation and ingenuity. Work performed with minimal supervision; has considerable latitude in determining objectives and approaches to assignments.
- Requires a 4-year engineering degree and typically 8-11 years’ related experience.
- Professional registration is required at this level.
- Candidate must be cognizant of the capabilities and limitations of various computer software packages and automated engineering and design equipment to effectively direct their use for diverse engineering assignments.
- Maintain current knowledge of ASHRAE Standards, Building Energy Efficiency Codes and Life Safety Codes.
- Must apply Codes requirements for design and construction procedures to meet changing priorities and industry trends.
- Performs detailed calculations and directs the preparations of working drawings, develops specifications, instructions, and other related documents of a major project, two or more projects of significant size and complexity, or several projects of moderate size and complexity.
- Reviews vendor bids and shop drawings for substantial materials to be used in the design to assure compliance with specifications, code and requirements of the project.
- Reviews drawings and evaluates the need for design changes and makes appropriate recommendations.
- Consults with construction personnel concerning design constructability as related to field conditions, sequencing, and scheduling of construction activities.
- Ensures that production of drawings, specifications, reports, and analyses meet scope, schedule, cost and quality requirements.
- May plan, schedule, coordinate, and oversee the work of lower-level engineers who assist with particular projects.
- Responsible for keeping current on new structural products and materials and must be able to judge their suitability for specific uses. Should compile and communicate with said product representatives on a regular basis.
- Develop specifications, working drawings, instructions and other related documents based on design criteria of the project.
- Consult with construction personnel concerning design constructability as related to field condition, sequencing, and scheduling of construction activities.
- Ensure that production of drawings, specifications, reports, and analysis meet scope, schedule, cost, and quality requirements.
- Plan, schedule, coordinate and oversee the work of Level I, Level II, Level III designers, and Junior Level Engineers who assist with projects.
- Keep current on new mechanical products and must be able to judge their suitability for specific use. Should communicate with vendors for new trends and technology. Attend webinars for products that are normally specified for building mechanical system.
- Monitor engineering manhours spent and inform supervisor for engineering overruns.
