PRN Phlebotomist

The PRN Phlebotomist position is a critical role focused on the accurate and efficient collection of blood specimens from patients during weekend shifts. This role ensures that all specimens are collected in a timely manner, adhering to strict safety and quality standards to support accurate laboratory testing and diagnosis. The phlebotomist will interact directly with patients, providing a compassionate and professional experience while maintaining patient comfort and safety.

This position requires flexibility and reliability to cover weekend day shifts as needed, supporting the healthcare team in delivering continuous patient care. Ultimately, the role contributes to the overall success of the laboratory services by ensuring high-quality specimen collection and proper handling procedures are consistently followed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program.
  • Current certification as a phlebotomy technician (e.g., CPT, PBT) from a recognized certifying body.
  • Demonstrated experience performing venipuncture and specimen collection.
  • Ability to work weekend day shifts on a PRN (as-needed) basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) and laboratory information systems (LIS).
  • Strong interpersonal skills with experience in patient-facing roles.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and HIPAA regulations related to specimen handling and patient privacy.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection procedures following established protocols and safety guidelines.
  • Verify patient identity and ensure proper labeling and documentation of all specimens collected.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the phlebotomy work area and equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with patients to explain procedures and alleviate any concerns or anxiety.
  • Collaborate with laboratory staff and healthcare providers to ensure timely processing and transport of specimens.
  • Adhere to infection control policies and maintain compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Manage inventory of phlebotomy supplies and report any shortages or equipment malfunctions.
