About the Role:

The Phlebotomist Night Shift plays a critical role in the healthcare system by performing blood collection procedures during overnight hours to support timely diagnostic testing and patient care. This position ensures that blood specimens are collected safely, accurately, and efficiently from patients of all ages and backgrounds, adhering to strict protocols and infection control standards. The role requires working closely with laboratory personnel, nurses, and physicians to facilitate smooth specimen processing and maintain high-quality patient service.

Night shift phlebotomists must be adaptable to a fast-paced environment, often handling urgent and emergency cases while maintaining composure and professionalism. Ultimately, this position contributes to accurate laboratory results that are essential for effective diagnosis, treatment, and patient outcomes during critical overnight hours.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician from an accredited program (e.g., ASCP, NHA, or equivalent).
  • Previous experience performing phlebotomy procedures in a clinical or hospital setting.
  • Ability to work independently during night shift hours with minimal supervision.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and specimen tracking.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a hospital or acute care environment during night shifts.
  • Additional certifications in CPR or Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Familiarity with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and laboratory information systems (LIS).
  • Strong interpersonal skills with experience in patient-focused care.
  • Ability to handle pediatric and geriatric patients with sensitivity and skill.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection procedures on patients following established protocols and safety guidelines.
  • Verify patient identity and ensure proper labeling and documentation of all specimens collected to maintain chain of custody and accuracy.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the phlebotomy area and equipment, ensuring compliance with infection control and safety standards.
  • Communicate effectively with patients to explain procedures, alleviate concerns, and provide compassionate care during blood draws.
  • Collaborate with laboratory staff to ensure timely transport and processing of specimens collected during the night shift.
  • Monitor inventory of phlebotomy supplies and report needs to management to avoid shortages.
  • Adhere to all regulatory and institutional policies, including HIPAA and OSHA requirements, to protect patient confidentiality and workplace safety.

Skills:

The required skills enable the phlebotomist to perform blood collection accurately and safely, ensuring patient comfort and specimen integrity. Strong communication skills are essential for explaining procedures and calming anxious patients, especially during overnight hours when staffing may be limited. Attention to detail is critical for proper specimen labeling and documentation, which directly impacts laboratory results and patient care. Preferred skills such as familiarity with EMR systems enhance efficiency in specimen tracking and data management.

Additionally, the ability to work independently and manage time effectively during the night shift ensures that urgent and routine collections are completed promptly, supporting continuous patient care.
